Shouldn't our HOA elected officials be impartial?

I think Cliff has work tirelessly for Broadlands and he does a great job disclaiming his personal opinions.

However, he was part of the HOA board that unanimously passed a resolution in favor of HCA despite an HOA survey in which the majority of respondents opposed HCA. Since about half the residents didn't respond to the survey it still came to over a quarter of Broadlands who outright opposed the hospital yet none of the three "representatives" felt compelled to cast a dissenting vote or point out that maybe they shouldn't be voting on such a resolution at all. The majority of the board was controlled by Van Metre (the property seller) so that was a HUGE conflict of interest.

Don't think HCA didn't use the "unanimously approved by the Broadlands HOA board" line whenever they got a chance.

Also Cliff may be giving mis information about growth.

Our school administrators also said last night at their budget meeting last with the BOS said by far the largest growth in the county and the foreseeable future is dulles south especially the rt 50 corridor. I believe our school administrators should know where the largest growth in the county is.

This article is also very interesting about health care in the area and what is really needed not fear mongering like the pro BRMC people want us to believe. http://www.leesburg2day.com/articles/2008/03/06/news/fp612brmc030508.txt

    Sigh, here we go again.
Please point out to me all these lots down there. The BoS just turned down another rezoning application in Dulles South and don't forget the CPAM that was defeated.
The biggest growth that is near Dulles South will be the continued development around Brambleton and Loudoun Valley. This area is between Ashburn and Dulles South. My guess is the School Board considers this "Dulles South." For proximity to hospital location purposes, it is inbetween Rte 50 and BRMC.
In the Ashburn area, you have 6000 unbuilt units at Brambleton. 2000 or so at Loudoun Station. 1200 at One Loudoun. Around 1000 at the other retirement community on Loudoun County Parkway. About 2000 on the Belmont Ridge corridor.
Maybe someone here can point out all the unbuilt units on Rte 50 that can match this that I'm not aware of.

    Blue devil-
    The correct numbers are:
2082 surveys sent, with prepaid return envelopes.
    1258 (60%) not answered.
As a percentage of total Broadlands residents,
    318 (15%) supported the hospital.
357 (17%) did not support the hospital.
79 (4%) felt they did not have enough information.
    17 (1%) had no opinion.
    53 (3%) were invalidated.

All of us there that tallied the ballots, including those against the hospital, agreed that the closeness of the vote indicated there was no clear viewpoint of the residents about this issue.

The HOA Board eventually issued a unanimous opinion to support the hospital for the reasons outlined in the Newsletter. This vote took place at the request of a resident member and was supported by the other two resident members. There was absolutely NO Developer influence on this vote. They simply went along with it.

Lee, with your recent history of fearmongering, YOU are the last person on this forum who should be accusing anyone of doing it.

In Post #28, I meant to say 6000 units in Moorefield Station, not Brambleton.

way way into the future and only if there is a metro. Moorefield has been very vocal as well as the other developers about their plans to cut back considerably if there is no metro.

Thanks for correcting my numbers. And, yes, there was no clear opinion from the residents. However, 32% responding is higher than some county voter turnout and we don't see fit to just ignore those who voted.

Since the point of this thread was when should HOA officials speak on behalf of the commmunity I still believe there was no reason for the HOA to be backing HCA and particularly giving them a unanamously approved stamp of approval since the residents did NOT have a clear opinion but a decidedly split one.

1 resident member requesting a vote and two supporting it comes to 3. Yet, 357 residents opposed HCA. The HOA had no business issuing any opinion with respect to the hospital.

    Thanks for your opinion.
There have been a few other things that the HOA Board has spoken about in front of the county to voice HOA Board support. In most cases, the Board didn't get the resident's opinion on it. Things such as sheriff's deputies, sign plans, Clyde's, school boundaries, etc.
You may not like it, but an HOA Board can choose to endorse or oppose something without any input from the residents, nor does any such HOA endorsement imply whether ANY individual residents support the HOA's action or not.

I think it would be more inappropriate for an HOA Board to NOT issue an opinion on a project that could have an impact on the community and one that generated as much discussion as this one did. Too many times you here the "don't want to get involved" comment. I think that's more of a disservice to a community.

    I do not like it.

Yes, for involvement. I believe the HOA did participate in voicing some of the resident concerns over the hospital which did lead to changes to the original plans. And, kudos for the HOA for helping to gather and pass on information that residents can use when making their own opinion.

I disagree that the HOA Board needed to publicly vote on a motion with the respect to the hospital.

Here is the thing about opinions and tushies...everyone has one, and a lot of them stink.

    Ok, humor aside.

I fully support Cliff making his support of HCA & BRMC a public matter, not because I agree with him or the arguments that he makes, but because his opinion differs from mine. I am trying to keep my own conscience clear from hypocrisy.

It is so easy to say, "Right on brother!" when the opinion of leader aligns with your own, and to label it as inappropriate for them to express it when they differ.

If General Washington (and the other founding fathers) had never expressed their displeasure with England, we'd still be Brits.

disagree: the board should speak on behalf of themselves, residents should speak when given the opportunity, and a board member who is a resident should have NO gag order when it comes to issues that effect the neighborhood!

are residents lemmings that will change their minds depending on what board memenber think?!? highly doubt it.

No one on the HOA Board at the time saw the BRMC issue as "political." It was a major addition to the commercial area of our community. The HOA Board members spent a lot of time and money to look into this issue. We felt that it was our responsibility to issue an opinion on this.
Anyone was free to agree or disagree with it, or submit their own opinion to the county.
One of the things I learned during this whole process, and it surprised and somewhat sickened me, is that getting more healthcare into our county was,and is, political. I guess any time there's lots of money at stake, the situation will become political.

Do you feel the HOA Board should not issue an opinion on anything? Should we have said nothing when, on several occasions, there were school boundary proposals that shipped parts of Broadlands to schools several miles away?

If your answer to the above questions is "yes", then I guess I'm not the kind of person you want on the HOA Board.
