Its been 2-3 days since the snow and ice storm and many of Southern Walks (and I suspect the rest of Broadlands secondary streets) are still covered with snow and ice.:( Is VDOT responsible for plowing, salting and sanding our roads.[?] If so they have done a poor job.[V] On my street, Inglewood Ct, you can't see any pavement at all.[:0] Roads were in much better condition after previous snow/ice events this winter.

I spoke to the HOA who told me to call Mark Holliday @ VM who was out so I was connected to VM Customer Care who told me that snow removal is the responsibility of the VM Land Department who were all out of the office. (sorry about the run on sentence but thats the run around I got) I left a unhappy message noteing that with Monday's predicted 6" of snow on top of the current ice, many Southern Walk roads will become impassible.

The newsletter and HOA website identify which roads are VDOT's responsbility, which are the HOAs, and which are still the developers' duty to plow.

I was told Inglewood and Ridgeway are not private owned - which would lead me to believe they are now VDOT's. However, having said that, I too noticed that with previous snow we were plowed, and I was impressed with the rate at which it happened. Our roads after this last storm were awful and still are.

Ridgeway was one of the last roads to be plowed in the entire broadlands community (Vestals Gap and other secondary main roads) looked good after the second day. Claiborne looked good on day two until you got to the nature center and then it was like why bother to plow any further?

I don't even want to think about Monday.

Sorry, I didn't have the current (February) HOA Newsletter in front of me last night when responding... see page 9 for which roads are still the developers and which have been transferred to VDOT. Inglewood and Ridgeway are not yet VDOT's. The article also notes which roads the developer considers priority for removal.

"Private" roads are ones that will never be transferred to VDOT and will remain with the HOA for maintenance, as I understand it. I think the only "private" roads are in the Courtyard home areas, i.e. the single family homes in Longleaf (across from the Southern Walk models...Milford Drive, etc.) and Overland Park.

I live on Larchmont, In the Long Leaf section of Southerwalk. Our roads are almost impassable. A complete sheet of ice has formed and I can barely get in and out of my own drive way ( I own a non 4 wheel drive truck). This is ridiculous. But on an upnote, I see that Van Metre has plowed, salted and treated all the streets where the new townhomes are being consturcted.

That's probably because they are trying to sell those lots.

4 wheel drive vehicles aren't any good on ice anyway....they slide just like the regular cars. I've never thought too much of the plowing as a whole in this entire county....it's pretty poor, but then I'm comparing it to Buffalo, NY where I'm from.

In that section the sidewalks were also impassable. Not many people bothered to shovel the sidewalks in front of their houses. I had to either walk on their lawns where some of the snow had melted or in the street. I don't think any were shoveled around the "Windover Square" park.

I did not see many sidewalks shoveled anywhere in Broadlands after this particualr storm. It is darn near impossible to shovel that type of ice.

I agree it was impossible to shovel the ice but these hadn't even been shoveled after the first snow which was a very light consistency. At least the kind people in my street all shoveled their sidewalks after the first snow making walking dogs a lot easier. I know this isn't the top priority for most people - nobody walks very much around here - I go out four times a day and I'm lucky if I meet one person. I guess the only people you see out walking in the winter is either (some) dog owners or foreigners.

View the newsletter online at http://hoa.broadlands.org/hoa/newsletter/index.html

Most of the streets in the neighborhoods are either HOA done or done by the builder (developer). Many of the single family home streets will eventually be done by VDOT, but most are not turned over yet.

Southern Walk is handled by the developer according to the newsletter. The newsletter also lists contacts for each section to report problems to.

I think the HOA contracted plowers are doing great jobs now compared to 2 years ago. It was MISERABLE before.. now its above average to good now I think.
