Yup, those little plastic guys have to be up on the curb! If a police officer drives by and sees it, he will gently remind the owner that they pose a traffic barrier. The signs up on the curb are more visible at any rate, but generally don't seem to catch the attention of speeding, mindless, drivers. Police will give a citation, if after warnings, the sign remains in the street.

The police will also tell your kids to get out of the street if they are aren't on the road for a legitimate reason. People (of all ages) are allowed to use the road for bicycles and other "street ready" conveyances with the proper safety gear.

We need better signs to remind Folks in the cars that they aren't the only ones with legitimate rights to the roads, and specifically, in this case about cul-de-sacs, we are talking about little children who:

1: are in the road doing things they are legally allowed to be doing, and
2: are drawn onto the road due to "running after a ball" and other things the little tykes tend to do quickly, without warning, and without thinking

I figured cul de saccers were immune to traffic hazzards and that's why the majority of them speed carelessly on straight-aways. My ignorance is bliss theory is now out the window.

I totally agree with this. Speeding is definitely an issue in this community. It's not just limited to teenagers or young adults, as many folks in this thread have pointed out already. In fact, on my morning and evening commutes, I see more minivan drivers speeding and talking on the phone (no headset even) with a ton of kids in the back. Of course, I bet these are the same people who would scream at someone plowing through their street. It's quite NIMBY (actually NIMFY, since it's the front yard). The mentality is, "I can drive fast down your street and endanger your kids, but HOW DARE YOU DO THAT WITH MINE."

So, if more signage would make people feel better, then I am all for it. The residents who want it should pay for the signage, whether it is an HOA- or state-controlled street.

We all hear the "kids will be kids" argument a lot. Still, it's no excuse for a parent not to be eagle-eyed with their kids. In my family, kids don't go out the door without a parent (our alarm system chimes when a door or window is opened) and they know the difference between a street and playground.

Sometimes the police officer is called and alerted to the plastic thingees.

Just out of curiosity, is there someplace where this is written?

Agree. My wife was making a left to go to Walgreen's and was hit head on by another driver northbound on Claiborne who ran through the intersection at 45mph about 6 weeks ago.

We had the new car 2 days and it was totaled.

The other driver's car went right, hit the curb, became airborne, landed, rolled over and then crossed all 4 lanes of Claiborne and headed towards the pond at the Nature Center before slamming on brakes. You can see the skid marks on Claiborne.

That is YOUR opinion and your choice. Every parent has the right to raise their child as they see fit (let's not bring up extremes, shall we).

But thanks for the sermon anyhow. Got anything else to tell us about how wonderfully diligent you are when raising your children? Maybe like, they brush their teeth 8 times a day or they never eat refined sugar or they never pick their noses? ;)

This was based on what a neighbor told me. She used to put a platic sign in the street every day. The cops came by and told her that she was breaking the law and that a concerned neighbor had reported her.

I don't think that teaching you kids not to play in the middle of the road is an extreme. If that offends you, then you are thin-skinned.

tigercpa - I hope your wife is ok! I went through that intersection while all the emergency equipment was there. I saw the car over by the Nature Center and figured it ran the stop sign - it was pretty mangled.

I am always a little paranoid when I am at that intersection. Just today a guy in a pest control vehicle rolled right on through as I was making a left there too. Idiots!

Me thin-skinned?!? HAAAA HAAA!! That truly makes me laugh! Considering the "games" I sometimes play, I have rhino skin! Ask anyone on here who knows me. :D

And FWIW, our son is not allowed to play in the street either, but that is OUR choice. I do not see anything terribly wrong with parents allowing THEIR kids to play in the street however. You ever try to play STREET hockey in the grass? ;)

we played in the street as kids- with a basketball- a game called 4 square- can't do it in the grass. when a car was coming we moved out of the street. it wasn't anything we were taught- guess the sense of survival kicked in and we stayed alive! ;)

but- i don't remember ppl being so self centered and distracted back then- all you did when you were driving was... DRIVE. you respected your neighborhood and didn't fly thru the streets.

VDOT says our roads are still maintained by the developer (HOA newsletter says differently for Ridgeway though). The ideal place for the signs would be at the top of Ridgeway Dr. and the top of Highview Trail (right before Ridgeway intersects with HTP at the top of the hill). And I'm talking the bright yellow signs on their own poles...not the dinky orange signs underneath the speed limit signs.

I plan on attending the HOA meeting and requesting Van Metre install these signs.

Actually, I would be against permanent signs.

If one gets approved then other parents will probably want the same thing on their streets. I would have to image that most, if not all of the true residential streets have kids that play on them from time to time.

Are we going to put signs up on EVERY street that will most likely be ignored after a few weeks (like most every other road sign)?

I would still be for the "out-of-the-ordinary" temporary sign that will catch a drivers attention more readily.

and the sign says you got to have a membership card to get inside

i keep talking about making 8x10 signs that look like a speed limit sign with 25 on it, laminating it, glue it on a paint stick, and pass them out to people walking so we can wave them at crazy drivers...

Unfortunately, crazy drivers are rarely concentrating on the road!

Woulo Van Metre be responsible for the costs or would residents be charged for this through our HOA dues? I'm just asking, and I am not saying that I would be opposed or in favor.
