    Hi folks-
To Joe, and others, who might wonder what impact the HOA, and other concerned citizens, can have.

On a number of occasions I, representing the Broadlands HOA, have contacted the Sheriff's Office about speeding issues. I gave him the particulars of the areas concerned and the number of residents I heard from. This led to increased random patrols of these areas.

One that was particularly effective was at the corner of Waxpool/Truro Parish. Cruisers started parking on Waxpool, a few yards south of the intersection (across from the Mobil). I stopped and talked to a sheriff while he was parked there to ask if he caught many speeders. He stated that he had given out numerous tickets and warnings. Needless to say, the incidents of speeding was greatly reduced through this area.

On another occasion, I received complaints about cars eastbound on Truro Parish speeding as they approached the bottom of the hill.
Another call to the sheriff led to increased coverage of this area.

Numerous residents on Glebe View Dr. east of Truro Parish contacted
the sheriff's office about speeding and I saw cruisers on many occasions patrolling for speeders.

Concerns about speeders on Vestals Gap, Ellzey, and Chickacoan Trail led to the installation of three stop signs that were not planned.

Althought there are not nearly as many sheriffs as we need, if residents are diligent about calling with speeding complaints, they will check it out.

As for the benefit of these forums: I don't know about Big Brother, but the HOA is definitely watching. :)

Just a few comments on this issue. I live on Vestals Gap close to Claiborne. In the eve. people fly down this street. Of course, my child is not allowed to play in the street but even the sidewalk feels dangerous at that time of the day. So, is joe00134 suggesting that I should take my child somewhere else in the neighborhood to play so people can get home from work minutes faster? We paid lots and lots of money to live in this neighborhood, to be near the school, and near many children. If I had realized how unsafe Vestals Gap is, we would have bought somewhere else.

I'm writing down license plates of obvious speeders to report to the police.

Thank you to everyone who obeys the traffic laws.

Chase, Thank you for collecting the information on the speeders. If you can, try to get a description of the driver too.

    Thanks a lot!!!!!!

I believe people driving on Glebe View Drive between Broadlands Blvd and Truro Parish do not know that the speed limit is 25 MPH. There is NO sign on this road to indicate that. Very few people are driving even close to that speed on Glebe View. The average seems to be atleast 40.
A portion of Glebe View is part of "Stream Valley Park" nature walk, seems kind of sad to see cars whizzing by the many pedestrians on this road.

chase, I am located on the other end of vestals gap (towards glebe view) and we have the same problem there. Some of it has to do with the hill (although small, people seem to need to gain speed to go up it) and of course coming down the hill is coasting at 40+... I also believe that many drivers are just not aware of the 25 mph limit throughout the hood.

Whats the frequency of speeders? Everyone that drives that road are speeding? Or is it just a few? If it's everyone, then they might not know the speed limit for that stretch of road. Might be an issue for the county to put by more speed limit signs.

I will contact the developer and see if they can get some speed limit signs installed along this stretch of Glebe View.

my estimate for my stretch of Vestals Gap is approx 25% are safe speed, another 50% maybe just above speed limit (like 25~35 mph range), and the remaining 25% are over 35, with an occasional 50 mph thrown in, no joking

I never travel on Vestals Gap Drive, but I thought the speed limit throughout Broadlands was 35 MPH? Or is that just on the main thoroughfares like Claiborne and Waxpool?

35 is way to fast for residental roads where you have homes on both sides of you. 25 should be the max.

25 mph is the limit for ALL roads in Broadlands, EXCEPT Claiborne, Waxpool, Truro Parish

Okay, thanks for the clarification. I try not to speed, obviously, but I wasn't sure what the official limits were. I bet a lot of people are similarly unaware.

It's also 35 mph on Broadlands Blvd...

And, I'm guessing it's also 35 mph on Glebe View since there are no speed limit signs on Glebe View. If anyone enters Glebe View from either Broadlands Blvd or Truro Parish, which are both 35 mph, there are no speed limit signs to indicate that the speed limit has changed from 35...

From the Virginia Driver's Manual (empahsis added):

Maximum speed limit for passenger vehicles and motorcycles (unless posted otherwise)
Type of highway or zone Limit
Interstate highways in designated rural areas 65 MPH
Interstate highways in areas not designated as rural 55 MPH
Limited access and non-limited access highways 55 MPH
Secondary routes which include all public roads and streets not designated as part of the interstate or primary system 55 MPH
School, business and residential zones 25 MPH
(You are required to travel 25 MPH in a school zone only when indicated by a sign or signal. Otherwise, maintain the posted speed.)

With the exception of school zones, the basic rule of thumb concerning the streets in Broadlands - if you are not on Broadlands Blvd, Claiborne Pkwy, Turuo Parish, or Waxpool then the speed limit is 25MPH.

I thought I would add to this topic and (what a shock) it isnt related to the hospital :). Chickacoan Trail needs to be added to the list of streets that have a large amount of speeders. I know stop signs have been added around the neighborhood, however I am wondering if a stop sign could be added where the path comes up to Chickacoan Trail and crosses the road over to the other side heading towards Stone Wheel. This might help in slowing down all the "Hot Rodders" who see an open expanse of street and floor it to Broadlands Blvd. Just a thought. Donna

I don't use Glebe View that often, but I just did-- there's no speed limit signs on Glebe View between Truro Parish and Broadlands Blvd.

My guess is its 25MPH because its a residental zone - there are driveway aprons on it.

    Hi folks-
As promised, I contacted the developer, Terrabrook, about the lack of stop signs on Glebe View between Truro Parish and Broadlands Blvd.
There are now 2 speed limit signs (1 for each direction) posted along this stretch of road.
