I am growing seriously concerned at the amount of excessive speeding down Ridgeway and Stone Hollow in Southern Walk section. Are there any ways to improve the situation?

    1) Are their plans for additional exits for the community to reduce the amount of traffic on these streets? Seems like 2 exits for these amount of houses in southern walk is not sufficient.

    2) Speed bumps - I've heard that once the streets get released to the county that we can explore this option.

It is particularly disturbing when a Mini-van goes speeding by - I would think these folks should know better. I recall a yound child being hit and killed a year ago in that neighborhood near MCI - I wish people would get a clue and slow down.

    Sparrow-
    1) no.
    2) The streets get released to VDOT, not the county. I do not believe VDOT will allow speed bumps on their streets, but we are looking into it. We are also considering trying to get additional stop signs installed.

Stop signs will not slow people down - they will just speed faster to get from one to another.

Cliff - any idea why VM didnt include an exit/entrance out of the upper ridge onto whatever that road is that connects to Claiborne?

It was deemed not necessary by the planning commission, and they could get three more houses in there.

Actually, there are stubs of streets that would exit into any other subdivision off Ridgeway, however, the 'Villages of Waxpool', did not include those streets in its design.

It may be a good idea to have the two school's PTOs petition to have that school zone changed from a 25 MPH zone (which the street already is) to a 15 MPH zone.

    1) I am guessing the stubs from future neighborhoods will cause more traffic on these streets for those folks to get over to Claiborne.
    2) Additional Stop signs would be helpful - I would think many people would roll through them but keeping people from hauling a55 at 45 mph would be great. Only a complete a55 would floor it from one sign to the next so it should cut the excessive speeding nicely.

I disagree. We were having a significant problem with speeding on Vestal's Gap between Claiborne and Glebe View. Two speed limit signs were installed and it drastically reduced the problem.

BTW, they have done studies -- the human psyche being what it is, people tend to speed more between stop signs, probably to make up for perceived time, than if there are no stops. I would think speed limit signs would help, there are long areas where the speed isn't posted. I don't think there's one on Chickacoan when you turn off Broadlands Blvd, so the folks may not realize Chickacoan is 25.

I've noticed that people take the Village speed limit very seriously. Is that because of the signs or patrolling?

We are looking into a few different options to stop speeding. There is a big problem with speeding on any road in Broadlands that is a cut thru. I have a call into VDOT to see if there is a possibility of having speed humps installed. Once I hear back from them I will let you know what they suggest.

    My two cents....

If you're driving down Glebe View toward Broadlands Blvd, please watch your speed and watch for cars parked on the side of the road.

Over the past two weeks, there have been two accidents right in front of my house and many narrowly avoided accidents as well. Both accidents were people plowing into cars parked in front of or just up the street from my house. THe first was my daughter's speech therapist who was actually parked a bit further up the street so she wasn't directly across from the construction. She was fortunate because the driver stopped to find her. The second was a truck and I have no idea who it belonged to - only that someone slammed right into it. No one ever came knocking on our door so I have no idea what the outcome was of that one.

It's gotten to the point where I insist that visitors park in our driveway and I won't allow my daughter to even go to the mailbox with me - I was almost sideswiped getting the mail yesterday and I wasn't even standing in the road.

This isn't construction traffic but residents who aren't watching their speed nor paying attention to their surroundings. It's not a blind curve!

On another note, has anyone else noticed that at the corner of Truro Parish and Glebe View, the sign says it's "Truro Parrish"?

The county sherriff has been out all week here in the AM on claibourne

In the village people don't speed on the 'south half' of the road due to all the enforcement. Its pretty common (at least 1-2 times a month) to go through speed traps on that road.

I would vote against speed bumps anywhere in the community myself. I hate those things.

I agree, but speed humps seem to deter speeding more than the speed bumps do because the cars will bottom out if they go too fast over them. Stop signs don't work as we all have witnessed people blowing thru them. We live on a busy street and have tried everything to slow down these people: we have yelled, put cones in the roads, had balls "accidently" roll into the street and nothing has worked. I hope VDOT will say the humps are the best deterient. Until people start caring about the safety of our streets, maybe having them spend money on car repairs is the only way.

I seem to remember speed bumps were talked about at one of the BOA board meetings. VDOT will not install speed bumps on VDOT roads for two reasons:

    1. Its harder to plow roads
    2. They're a bear to maintain.

Increased enforcement, additional stop signs, additional speed limit signs will probably be what will happen.

Yes it was discussed, but my undertanding was that since several streets in Vienna that are VDOT controlled had the speed humps installed that we weren't sure if they would or would not install and maintain them. I will find out what VDOT suggests about these. The streets in Vienna that have the spped humps are plowed by the state and they are heavily traveled residential roads. Let's see what VDOT says and go from there.

Just say NO to speed humps/bumps. I have lived in communities with them. They only way they will slow traffic is if they are placed every 30 feet but because of the expense they generally place one per block . Also many low profile cars bottom out on them at any speed. They get chewed up by snow plows and most importantly they are a hindrance to emergency vehicles. For example an ambulance driver has to decide which is worse , jostling a critical patient or making a very slow ride to the hospital.

I vote no on speed bumps too. I'm happy with increased enforcement of speed limits, increased signage of speed limits and increased attention being paid by drivers with particular emphasis on the third option.

Just because they were dumb enough to install speed bumps in Vienna doesn't mean we need to make the same mistake here.
