The last few times I've been down Waxpool (by Carisbrooke & apts), there has been a Loudoun County sheriff parked on the shoulder at the top of the hill. He had 2 people pulled over on Friday.

Also, last night around 9pm I was heading down Claiborne and at the 4-way stop at Broadlands Blvd, I looked to my left and saw lots of blue lights - at least 2, maybe 3 police cars - at the intersection of Demott & B-lands blvd. I wouldn't be suprised if it was an accident - I've seen way too many close calls there.

I got gas at Safeway about 8:30 last night. The police had the Broadlands / Demott intersection closed. There were fire truck(s) and ambulance(s) there, and I saw at least one vehicle (large SUV or large van) on its roof. I didn't want to be part of the accident, so I only glanced at it -- not to mention it was dark. I hope noone was badly injured.

That's the second SUV accident with a rollover that I've heard about in the past week and a half.

The first one happened on Ashburn Farm Road as an SUV was turning left across Ashburn Farm into the road by the Exxon/Shoppers Food Warehouse. Whoever was driving didn't watch traffic and they pulled out in front of a van. The van evidently scooped the SUV and rolled it over another vehicle's hood, to land on its 4 wheels.

    Scary ...

Make that the 3rd. This one happened right in front of my eyes. 9/15/05, 9:18 am. Drainsville Road and Rt 7 in Sterling.

Ford Expedition making left turn (with green arrow) from Rt 7 west to Drainsville North. T-boned at amazingly high rate of speed by dark sedan at came out of nowhere. Flipped the Expedition over. It was horrifying.

People don't realize that the high center of gravity on those things make them very prone to that type of flip when hit from the side.

My mum lives in fairfax city and they have tried speed humps, median things so you can't drive straight through them, etc.... they are all out within a few months for some reason -- they are never permanent. I don't think it works. I think traffic cameras in neighborhoods would be the best bet. That and radar-deployed spike strips... ;)

I wonder how many people complaining about speeding NEVER exceed the posted speed limit in Broadlands? Don't forget, 1 MPH over the posted speed is exceeding the posted limit. Or, is the threshold 2, 3, 4, 5, 10, etc. MPH? Who decides that it's OK to go x MPH over the speed limit before it's considered "speeding?"

Is it OK for someone you know in your neighborhood to exceed the posted speed limit but not OK for someone you don't know to exceed the limit by the same speed?

GCyr - I will decide what is okay.

It is okay to do 1-5 miles over in a 35mph or above zone. It is okay to do 1-3 miles above in a 25mph, residential zone.

This thread is not about barely going faster than the posted limit, it is about the speeders who are blowing by other cars on the road and those who are going SIGNIFICANTLY over the posted limit.

No, it is not okay for someone to speed EXCESSIVELY whether you know them or not!

There, you questions have been answered.

Thank you so much. I wondered who the authority on this matter was and now I know. However, I doubt that you have NEVER speeded in Broadlands, so I'll dismiss your comments for what they are.

Dismiss my comments based on common sense??? Ouch, I am hurt!

And you know what else? I truly do not believe I have ever sped in our Community. Running stop signs is my thing!

    So there! nyah nyah nyah!

    disgruntled-
This is an issue that the I'm concerned about, having witnessed it and heard from other residents about it. The problem right now is that the streets are under the control of the developer, Van Metre, and they refuse to change their signage for the street because they are trying to get the streets turned over to VDOT as soon as possible so they can get their bond money back. After all, we all know money is more important than safety.

Once this process is done (could be several months), the HOA will look into stop sign and speed limit sign locations and work with VDOT to get them installed. I would have no objection to having a large group of pi**ed off residents attend an HOA Board meeting to let Van Metre know what you think about the signage on Ridgeway. It's easy for them to ignore a few resident Board members and the occasional complaint from a resident, but another thing to blow off a large group of concerned residents.

I'm in the process now of working with the school transportation department and VDOT to get some things done to help the walkers attending Mill Run. The developer refused to do anything about this, too.

Pleas let me know if you get a work group together. I'd be happy to attend any meetings to hear your thoughts.

I've been almost rearended quite a few times on speeding to/from Safeway on Demott and of course Vestal's Gap (where they don't stop) and the people behind me get really peeved when I'm doing the speed limit. One nice guy even called me the "C" word; guess he had a fire to go to. This is instanity and I don't think anyone will do anything until people start getting hit. I imagine there have been a lot more cars hit than the previous poster noted. I've often asked for more police patrols, especially for the nuts who follow me home to yell at me for driving 25 in a 25 limit - How dare I??? The HOA said that we've had more sheriff's patrols, but I've seen no evidence. Heck I've seen many many people blow through the stopsigns at Clairborne and Broadlands Blvd!. This is a HUGE pet peeve and nobody's stopping it. What about people speeding thru the Safeway shopping center and ignoring all those stopsigns, double and triple parking so we cannot get through without risking a headon with the person's whos blowing the stopsign coming the other way!?

I think the added fines would make people think a little more, but nobody's patrolling to give them tickets. I say we take down the license numbers of the perpetrators and publish them in the monthly news magazines. That may work as a deterent. I called the sheriff's office a couple times, but they told me that if they don't see these people driving down Demott at 100mph (or clairborne or whatever boradlands road) then they can't do anything.

I've also seen kids playing all over the mailboxes on Vestals Gap, all they have to do is fall into the path of a car...

I agree with Lee very much, stop signs and limit signs are not helping. Cameras certainly would once people kept getting all those tickets for busing a55 in a 25 zone

On the topic of speeding. Yesterday afternoon around 5PM, a bike blows thru Clairborne followed by 8 deputies with lights and sirens. I wonder if the chase made the news.

Lets be realistic here.. traffic cameras have basically been killed in VA as a form of enforcement. For stupid reasons IMO.. but remains the same.. the state government killed off red light cameras this summer. So no one would be installing cameras as any sort of enforcement

Personally, I have noticed a big police presence in the neighborhood lately. It seems as though evey time I am on the road around my house I see a police car. So I do think they are listening to all the complaints.

PS: as of 7am still no action on the traffic lights at Claiborne and Broadlands blvd.

I saw at least 8-cops speed down Claiborne yesterday too ( I missed the vehicle they were chasing). It looked pretty serious. I am used to fire engines and the occasional cop, but not usually 8 at a time! I wonder what that was all about?
