    There has still been NO definitive proof that Brown Recluse spiders "reside" in the mid-atlantic region. I highly doubt what you saw was a Brown Recluse. Perhaps it was a Hobo spider which looks very similar.

    there actually has been proof over the last 5-10 years in much of virginia. we looked at the spider after we semi-squished it and it had the violin shape on its abdomen, and other distinctive features. i saved it - you wanna come see it? ;-)

    If you truly believe that it is a BR then take a close up picture of the spider and mail it to: info@hobospider.net to get a positive identification.

    BR's are EXREMELY rare in Virginia and if you do indeed have one it would be good to notify interested parties for documentation purposes.
