What is the community/HOA doing about all the standing water, espcially now a days with the west nile virus being so widespread.

I contacted the loudoun County DOH about the water behind our place and the need for spraying / testing for West Nile. I have to follow-up. I'll let you know what I hear.

We have a common drain in our back yard and the whole back yard around it is a swamp. I'm a little concerned about this as well.

The HOA is not able to do anything about spraying for mosquitos, etc. The only people who can authorize a spray is the county so you would need to contact the depatment of enviromental health at 703 777-0234. With your concerns

I followed up the Loudoun County Health Dept. This was the reply:

"I referred this complaint to Building & Development Erosion and Sediment Control Division who informed me the area in question is a wetland area, in the middle of the flood plains, and an intermittent stream. All this means is that there is nothing that can be done legally in this area. Furthermore, spraying is not an affective mosquito treatment and is generally never used."

Not much help here. I've asked him about testing and to clarify why nothing can be done "legally".

Most of the saved areas are wetlands, which are protected by environmental laws. Legally nothing can be done to affect the area.

I don't like the mosquitos either but there is nothing you can do but use OFF! or Citronella. We chose the location because of the wetlands so we knew what we were getting into. I have noticed that the frog population is up so hopefully the bug population will go down some eventually.

This is the first non-drought summer in a while and is abnormally wet for this time of the year. The mosquito population surge is a fluke.
I wouldn't be too concerned about west nile. It's here to stay and no amount of spraying will get rid of it. It's better to get infected while young so you become immune. Elderly and infants are the worst affected group from west nile.
