:) unfortunatly I know the county is empowered by the state to create ordinances limiting the use of paintball guns.. but I can't find any references to it on loudon's website or the web. So maybe we aren't limited here in loudoun :)

Ours is apri'po. Sic Semper Tyrannus. In this case you would be the greek dude with a spear and the snake would be the ruffians cutting through your yard.

I was actually just referring to the picture on our flag. The person standing with the spear is a woman. The woman, Virtue, represents Virginia. Just an interesting fact.

How about this idea: since you know they're coming home from school to cut through your yard, why not just wait for them at the gate with your dog? When they approach the gate say in a kind voice, "Sorry kids, I can't let you do this anymore. My kid and dog might get out."

It won't work in every situation, but talking with them as adults, even if they aren't acting like adults, can be effective.

You could also hire them for yard work. They'd get tired of that pretty fast and try to avoid your yard at all costs! :-D

So let me get this straight; some people are advocating talking to the Sheriff's office BEFORE even talking to the kids parents directly? So, when you talk to the police and they ask you "Do you know the names of these kids, where they live?", what are you going to say? "So sir/miss, I don't; but I'm sure if you stake-out my yard between 3 and 5pm, you will see the kids come through."

Proper chain of communication is, in my opinion:
    1. Talk to the kids
    2. Talk to their parents
    3. Talk to the police
You already did #1, and got nowhere. You need to go to #2 before calling the police. As a parent, I would rather have my neighbor approach me with an issue such as this one BEFORE the police is brought into the picture. You talk with them and then, if the problem persists, you can call the police. Honestly, we're all neighbors here and a little bit of communication between everyone can get a lot of problems solved before getting the police involved with every little issue some of us might consider "extreme". I for one would rather see the police spending their time dealing with the :censored: people who still don't understand that our new red lights actually mean "stop", as well as roaming our streets showing their presence in our community.

Honestly, I worked for a police department for 3 years and while our officers had a duty to respond to calls like the one you are preparing to make, we always found it irritating that the callers never took any time to solve the issue themselves before getting the officers involved. A community that has good communication amongst its neighbors is effectively a safer community. Go out and talk to your neighbors, get to know them, etc. For example, I could safely say that of the 25-30 houses on our court, over half of us know eachother on a first name basis, and in fact have even organized events amongst our wives, etc. Want to know how many 'issues' we've had on our street since 1999?

    *0*

Since we all know each other, we all look out for each other. If one of us sees something we don't like or know isn't right, we talk. We immediately know if there's an 'outsider' on our street and rest assured that the person(s) will have a set of eyes on them as they travel through 'our' area. And the kids? They all respect everyone else's property, because everyone knows who they are, and they know that all the parents talk to each other.

All I'm saying here is that calling the police should be your last resort, unless you personally feel threatened. If the kids going through your yard verbally abused you or threatened you in any way, and you feel that going to their home to chat with their parents would put your safety in jeopardy, then go right ahead and call the police. Otherwise, take the time to 'talk' with your neighbors; you might be amazed how many of them are willing to listen...

In a way I agree with Mr. Linux but I can see the issue for the home owner. In all cases you may not be able to identify the parents and it can also be a good thing to have a police record of an incident with a description should something occur in the future. If the kids are talking back, cussing at, or otherwise causing a disturbance for these people on a regular basis I would want to have a police report filed in case it escalated to broken windows, slashed tires, etc... etc... I've seen it escalate to those types of actions without police before and it's not good if it goes there. Sometimes it is better to stop the action before it escalates.

I mean what do you want them to do? Get in the car and follow these kids home? Who knows what they will run into when they get there. I'd give the kids a few warnings and then contact the police.

Does razor wire need to be approved by the HOA? Electric fencing? Might look trashy, but will do the trick.:)

I agree with trying to talk to the parents (it sounds like you know who they are) and then if that does not work, talk to the sheriff's office.

We had problems with kids cutting though our yard too, on there bikes, up and down our driveway etc. We always told the kids to not cut through our yard, but they never listened to us. I tried to find the parents, but I was not able to figure out where all of them were coming from. We built a fence, and that has stopped the problem.

I am appalled that these kids are opening up your fence and going through your yard. As a kid, I would never have even thought of doing something like that, and if I did, I would have been in trouble with my parents. We were raised that if you so much as accidentally threw your ball in someone's yard, you asked them if you could go retrieve it before entering their property.

Perhaps a different approach could be used.

Kids cut through yards, it is just a fact of life. If the only issue is that they are not closing the gate, maybe you could talk to them and give them permission to cut through your yard as long as the dog is not in the yard AND that they close the gate. Reasoning with them on an adult level MAY, I REPEAT MAY actually get them to respect you and your property better.

This one's probabaly the worst abuse of all, if it is true...Snopes claims it's 'undetermined':

    http://www.snopes.com/crime/cops/burger.asp

I hope it's true...it's not out of the realm of possibility that some entitled WASP would call 911 after getting bad service at Burger King.
