NEGATIVE. They are actually very helpful to the environment since their stomachs are unique in their ability to digest ridiculously harmful bacteria, like anthrax, that no other creature can. This ability is probably why they are fed protected as scientist are trying to figure out how they do this.

I know in Leesburg they (the town of Leesburg) were regularly setting off fireworks to try to scare them away. Maybe that’s how they all ended up here.

The HOA has met with the USDA in regards to this matter. Though the birds have been here for quite some time it is believed (by the USDA Representative) that they can be moved rather easy with out any fireworks, etc. I will be meeting with the home owners to go over the recomendations and hopefully unroost the vultures from their current location. Once these birds are moved they may show up in other areas of the community but they will be very easy to move from there as well so please let me know if they suddenly show up on your street. Any one with any questions can contact me directly either through the forum, or my email and phone number are listed on the website.

Hmmm...do you think the vultures hang around for the easy pickings? Sounds like your neighbors put garbage out in bags without using the bins. Perhaps using the bins would discourage the vultures from hanging around.

This was a problem on our street with one neighbor in particular. They had the best garbage - chicken bones, all kinds of food scraps, you name it, and without fail their bag was pillaged by vultures.

I think the first thing everyone should do is to USE the BINS.

I actually think that they are quite beautiful, when I see them flying from about 1/2 mile away. Not so attractive at 50 feet when they are munching on a 2 week old skunk carcass.

Just wanted to defend them, a little.

My sympathies. That sounds annoying and slightly creepy. Maybe you'll see them move from neighborhood to neighborhood. If they like high places to perch maybe someone should put up one of those cellular towers that look like a tree so they can hang out there. Kill two birds with one stone (so to speak).

The pellet gun idea sounds good but what if after you peg one of them the rest gang up on you and chase you down the street!

how about instead of looking to place blame we consider there might be more factors here then your theory.

Like for instance, Claibourne and all it's roadkill is right there too. It's also a heavily wooded area (not just a tree line).

Even when I lived on the street, people could put bags out from time to time without causing an issue. It's of late the problem has intensified.

Running around and pointing the finger really doesn't help anything.

As skeeved out as I am by birds, I'm not in favor of shooting at them. They aren't doing anything that they are supposed to do, which is hang around and eat easy pickins. We've encroached on their habitat and now they are returning the favor! lol

You consider birds ripping up your gutters and shingles 'doing what they are supposed to do' ??

Get a grip Sherlock. It's a just a theory that may prove useful.

Roadkill? Live there and there isn't much in the way of roadkill.

Our street experienced the nuisance with garbage until people starting using their bins. The birds are fewer and don't hang around. Now the problem is getting people to put their bins away.

    And you're contributing something useful?

I was referring to the roadkill cleanup. Gutters and shingles, not so much!

Just to let everyone know what we're doing, based on recommendation by the USDA. We're going out nightly for the next week or two and banging on the trees that they are in, which is scaring them off. So if you see a bunch of guys with sticks smacking tree trunks don't call the cops. :)

Hi, Staci. Please keep us posted on the meeting, as we haven't heard anything yet. I know some folks have been going out around 5 pm to try to rouse the birds from their roosting sites. Any other recommendations from the USDA?
    Thanks!

The 5:30 "wake-up calls" for the birds are definately helping. We haven't seen or heard too many of the birds in the morning. The birds are still there though, when the guys are hitting the trees, they are taking off, so they haven't left yet. Hopefully in the next week they will decide it's not a good place to live.

If anyone wants to help, join the guys outside around 5:30, they could use the help.

Notes for other homeowners if they take up residence in your area:
Take care of the problem immediately
Find out where the birds are roosting, and start the 5:30ish tree banging as soon as possible.
Try to encourage neighbors to keep their trash in the bins.
Don't leave any food out for them or anything that can be consided food for them.
