Cub Scouts is fun with a purpose - character building, life skills, citizenship and much more - for boys entering 1st through 5th grade. If you're interested in learning about Pack 1483, which meets during the school year at Hillside Elementary, there will be two parent information sessions next weekend (July 10 and 11).

All parents of new scouts, and parents thinking about checking out scouts, are invited to get together with Pack 1483's Scoutmaster for a 30 minute chat at Hillside Park (by the Stone House, where Broadlands Live events are held) - July 10 and July 11 at 10:30-11am. You'll have the opportunity to ask questions and find out more about the program while your kids can play on the playground. The first 15 minutes will be info about the Pack, the way we work and the program, and the second 15 minutes will be for Q&A.

If you'd like to know more about scouts but can't attend either time, check out www.pack1483.com and/or send me a PM.

Summer's a great time to find out more about scouts so your son can get involved right at the beginning of the school year.

If you have a son going into 1st through 5th grade at Hillside or Mill Run, check out Pack 1483 (Hillside) or 1484 (Mill Run).

Our volunteers would love to answer any questions you might have. Here's a flyer with some more info.

Audrey...what if your kid misses the Loudoun County School Board for Grade 1...but is still born in 2004? Would he still be deemed mature enough to join Cub Scouts?

    Thanks.

Boys can enter the first rank of Cub Scouts (Tigers) when they have completed kindergarten or are age 7. Each rank is designed to be age appropriate, so the Tiger program is simple, fun, and in my experience, was just right to accommodate the maturity level (attention span) of the first-grade boys. I think it would be better to start when he's going into first grade if possible - his extra maturity may be helpful in developing the leader qualities that scouting encourages. You can join in with pack activities over the summer and then formally join when the school year begins.

I have not had any luck with Pack 1484 responding to e-mail... is there a phone contact for that Pack? I was hoping to try to get my son to meet some of the boys this summer if possible before starting 1st grade at Mill Run.... Any other advice?

Here is the website for Pack 1484 - you could try contacting one of the den leaders.
