Lisa: SK8R is correct. Charitable non-profit organizations and political groups are EXEMPT from the Do-Not-Call Registry. HOWEVER, they can be fined up to $11,000 if you tell them not to call you again and they do not listen. See the excerpt below:

Also, as AFGM mentioned, this trend transcends party lines. I have gotten very annoying political calls from the Republican campaign. Someone with the Bob Gordon (R, At Large) campaign was adversarial and down-right bigoted. (I can't even post here what he said when I told him that I would not support his candidate.) I told them not to call again and I actually hope and pray that they do because I will report them and hope that they get fined the MAX!!!

The part that I thought was illegal was that they did not display the phone number they were calling from. I guess I was wrong though since that part of the law isn't active until 1/29/04 as well as I guess the political organization would not count as telemarketer. If anyone is intererested here is that part of the new law:

    "Requires caller ID transmission.
Beginning January 29, 2004, telemarketers must transmit their telephone number and if possible, their name, to your caller ID service. This will protect your privacy, increase accountability on the telemarketer's part, and help in law enforcement efforts."

I still would like to know how these organizations got my phone number if it is unlisted. And why they are unable to track that someone asked them to not call back.

We received a call on behalf of John Murphy's campaign last week.

It took me a minute to put two and two togetehr because the caller kept referring to the fact that I live in the "Doo-lay" district.

At the end of the call, I asked the telemarketer where she was calling from and she told me "Kansas".

I then told her that it would probably help the campaign if she pronounced the district properly, as "Dulles".

    Doo-lay - that's a new one for me.
