the day my 9 year old son picked up a dime then threw it back on the ground and said "what? it's only 10 cents." was the day we emptied that vase and showed him how pennies become dollars and dollars become video games! guess who has 2 piggy banks now and values every penny he gets...? :)

What's the old saying? Watch your pennies and the dollars will follow.

BTW, forget Coinstar, go to Chevy Chase and use their coin machine, and they don't take a cut.

coinstar doesn't take a cut either if you take the money in form of GC for their vendors

Wondering what you do - At the hair salon there is a stylist who cuts & colors my hair and then another girl who shampoos the color out, offers me a glass of water and puts the capes on, etc.. - so what do you tip? I've usually been giving 20% to the stylist but am I suppose to take part of her 20% and give it to the hairwasher or add a few more dollars for her? This can get pretty expensive when my bill hovers $80-$90. Thanks for your input.

I would check with the manager to see if the stylists share their tips like they do in restaraunts.

The stylists do NOT share tips with the assistants so do I take part of the 20% and give a couple dollars to her? Thanks.

Before Perez Salon Changed their policy (too many customer complaints) it was customary to tip each attendant. My sister said the primary stylist cut your hair but separate attendants were assigned to color, wash, and dry your hair. That's four people total. Most customers tipped $3-$5 for the wash. She usually gave 10%/10% to the colorist and person drying. The stylist was part owner so he didn't get a tip but most people tip the owner anyway. Now they pool the tips as they do in a restaurant but I don't think this method is very fair since some workers do an exceptional job and should be compensated accordingly.

www.tipping.org recommends $1 to $2 for the "person who shampoos or washes hair". Surprisingly, they suggest 15% for "one operator" (stylist) -- I thought 20% was the norm, too.

Being one of said restaurants with a tip jar I figured I'd chime in. We actually didn't have a tip jar the first month however customers kept insisting we put one up so we did. I actually use it primarily so there is less of a need to run across to the bank for change. At the most each day there's maybe $8-10 bucks a shift. My employees don't work here for the tips, but it takes care of a latte from *bucks or 1/2 a movie ticket....they work here because it's a fun environment and they have a great boss:). Unless it's obviously poor service I tip around 18-20%.
