Anyone checked around some of those fast growing maples that VM planted up and down the SW streets? Our maple is over 20' and has been growing like a weed since planted. Only problem, which a landscape company told us would happen, is the large roots are starting to push through the surface and kill the grass. As these are in our front yard, we'd rather not have completely dead grass. Any suggestions aside from a costly removal?

it is important to water a tree with a hose so the roots don't come to the surface (which would happen if you use a sprinkler to water the tree). if the roots are already at the surface, i am not sure what you can do. but the hose watering can prevent more roots from coming up for moisture.

This topic comes up time and again just like the roots of a Maple. It's a shallow rooted tree and has little to do with watering, so the arborist said. For eight years I have battled the decision to remove my Maple. It provides wonderful shade against the western sun in the summer.

My solution? Not all arborists will agree with this solution but so far I have kept my tree and lawn. I have the girder roots removed, fill in the cavity with soil and re-seed. I have done this 3 times and the tree is still healthy.

Have it done by a professional and be conservative about the amount of root removed.

One more thing - I was advised to remove the mulch around the base. The feeder roots promote more shallow roots that way. Hope this helps.
