Please continue to keep your bird baths full; birdbaths, water bins, pans, whatever it is you use for birds/wildlife. The wetland surrounding our community is completely dry. I fill my 2 qt ground birdbath twice a day due to the increase of creatures coming to drink. If you think our situation is becoming dire, pity the wildlife having to travel farther in search of water. You may be surprised at what shows up to drink. I have birds, raccoons, possum, and the other evening at dusk a fox showed up.

Copied the above post from the Water Restrictions thread in another forum, since I think it's an important subject and a good fit for this particular forum area as well.

Re: LCSA Seeks Mandatory Water Restrictions

Thank you. Wasn't sure it would garner a positive response unless more people viewed it.

Does this apply to the 3 gal per day maximum?

My only word of caution would be to be aware of the potential for mosquito breeding, although it is getting a bit late for that.

Very good points about mammals in addition to birds, especially if smaller streams and ponds in the area are dry. Too many people forget about non-winged creatures in times of drought. A ground level bowl of water could be useful for a lot of terrestrial species.

Even during the summer months the bird bath needed flushing daily to rid it of bird droppings, feathers and the ilk - not enough time to allow mosquito breeding. It does require some deligence and once you commit to providing water - don't stop. Wildlife learn to depend on a source and return to it again and again.

Thanks for the reminder. I filled my birdbath AND put a large bowl of water on the ground for the critters... something I wouldn't have thought to do had it not been for KTdid!

The wildlife behind our house should be doing very well since I still water 2-3 times a week.

I always leave water for the wildlife, the water gets changed daily. I enjoy watching the critters that come to drink.

I don't think that there is a three gallon limit per day. I think that you are only allowed to hand water plants with a container smaller than 3 gallons.
