Our less then 5 year old tank, has water accumulated on top of it where the hot water pipe goes into the tank - it looks like the water is also pooled where the anode rod is, and the cold water supply line goes into the tank. It all looks like it is coming from the water that pooled over by the hot water pipe. All three have corrosion and while the cold supply line and the anode are dampish - the water is still pooled where the hot water pipe is.

The mashpotato thing was a wet and browned paper towel (yuck!)

Any idea what the cause could be? Seems way to early to be replacing a water heater. Can anyone recommend a plumber?

I am editing because I did a search and lots of people gave a good thumbs up to Wacker, I will call them tomorrow.

So we had Wacker plumbing send someone out - great guy named Larry. Turns out Atlas plumbing who installed the water heater, did a poor sodering job and thus a slow leak occurred and corroded the cold water pipe, ran wonder under the lid to the hot water pipe and some other valve. Corroding all elements on top and most likly the heater itself. End of story - we need a new water tank after 5 years because of crappy install work by the original plumber. We called VM who have already pointed us to Atlas - I mean why would we expect any more from VM? Let's see how Atlas handles this, because we were told by Wacker that the tank really needs to be replaced and not just the corroded pipes.
