NOT BEAUTIFUL DEVELOPMENT LEE- do NOT hijack my thread!!!! ;) lol

Seriously- the OOB thread got me thinking about WHY so many businesses fail here- b/c they are DUPES of businesses we ALREADY have enough of! We don't NEED another dry cleaner, tae kwon do school, italian, burger, thai, chinese, pizza or chain restaurant... what IS missing from our business landscape? my thoughts:

Bath Junkie- a cool plae where you create your own bath fragrances:
    http://www.bathjunkie.com

An arcade- a REAL one, not Chuckee Cheese!

A Korean restaurant where you can cook bulgogi at the table!

an Amish Mennonite eatery- beat ya to it foodie! lol

what do YOU guys think is missing here?

A 'MicroCenter' type store where all us geeks can go buy that odd cable we need on a Saturday morning when building a new computer or upgrading one. We have TONS of geeks here, yet nothing that caters directly to them. Closest real computer-parts type store is Microcenter in Vienna. Sorry, but to me, BestBuy and Circuit City aren't considered 'computer' stores...

And I'm not talking about a small store; I want something that is big enough to have good inventory on lots of different things. Otherwise, it's just easier to wait a couple days and order online, or just drive to Vienna...

I'll second the Trader Joes. And throw in a Whole Foods.

    A furniture consignment store.

A restaurant with lots of healthy options (like a soup/ salad place or something like was being discussed on another thread).

That Bath Junkie place looks really cool, too. I'd never heard of it.

Lush might do better since it is more widely known than Bath Junkie.

A "geek" store would probably not make it. Online ordering is the way to go as it is cheaper and delivery is typically quick.

Korean? Eh, might try it a few times but there are enough Pacific Rim type restaurants already. I would rather have a GOOD Ethiopian or Morrocan restaurant anyday.

As for the Amish restaurant, if I want good, basic home-made type food, I can get that at home.

Trader Joe's, to me it is just another grocery store.

A real arcade would be off the hook!

Oh, and so would a new hospital! :devil2:

Oh, another one - a good, relatively smoke-free, steak place.

A Frye's would be fab! Can we throw in an In-N-Out burger while we're at it? Or a Peet's? ;-) (really I am an east coast girl...)

Also agree about the book store and TJ's

    Mexican....

    Thai (kidding!)

Paper (like Paper-Source) or scrapbooking store...this would make my life so much easier! Most have closed locally. I think Michael's made a mistake by closing the local Recollections. And I don't even scrapbook!!!

Seriously, I really don't think we need much. We already have a plethora of many things.

Eric (& all other g33ks!) - Take 28 to 606, get on 606 heading for the Toll Road, In the areas of Titan & the other concrete place, turn right on Ceader Green, then right into the industrial park. Go to the second building, the second door. There you will find thsi crazy little shop that sells everything from floppy drive cables to scrap metal junk sculpture. Take cash! He drops a 10% fee on all credit card orders.

However, I like your idea of a small shop here, but let me expand on it. We could keep the computer junk prices down by also selling gaming platforms and games that have a nice profit built on them. So we stock PS3, Nintendo, etc. to fund teh g33k habit. And as long as the prices aren't like 10% above New Egg or Tiger, folks will pay a premium for convenience.

Trader Joe's, Whole Foods, a good used bookstore, a soup & salad bar restaurant, a children's museum like the one in Winchester, Rio Grande, an independent donut place, a non-Starbucks coffee place, a bookstore/toystore/restaurant with children's entertainment (like musicians).

Speaking of retail, a second Go Bananas store will be opening in June in the Lansdowne Town Center.

real estate is too expensive for the low margin 'Im competing with online' type businesses who can't add much value beyond being local. That's why you see any such businesses in industrial areas... cheaper rent.

Selling console games you need to undercut the big boys to make anyone come to you.. and the margins just aren't fat enough to do that and stay in the black. Look at many of these resturants... who are in much more control of their expenses in terms of how they source materials and what they charge. Much more freedom and they can't cut it. Retail you don't have as many degrees of freedom.

There is a computer shop in Herndon in the KMart shopping center that sells 'bits', but its no where near a Microcenter or Fry's and the only reason you'd go there is to buy something in desperation (like a power supply, sata cable, etc) because they can't be price competitive.

Not to change the topic, but I was surprised two weeks ago after arriving at Microcenter to learn they don't carry PCI riser cards. I needed a 90 degree riser to install a second NIC into a 1RU server and didn't have the feel like waiting for one to be shipped since it was already Friday. Hindsight tells me I should have called first since I drove all that way for nothing but I was surprised Microcenter doesn't carry those. I am fairly sure I've seen them at Fry's and after thinking on it more it sort of hit me that Microcenter doesn't really cater much to the server world. I wouldn't be too shocked if Fry's opened shop around here (NoVa) at some point. They have already made it as far east as Atlanta.

I would be curious how many of us make the drive to Microcenter on a somewhat regular basis. I find I will go months without a trip and then several times within a short period.

There is no auto parts store in Ashburn. Only choices I know of are Leesburg and Sterling.

I'd be happy with a B&N in the area, but a used bookstore would be cool too. WIll never happen though.

La Chozita Grill in Leesburg. Little hole in the wall but good peruvian chicken.

c'mon now.... That's just rediculous. darn women and their obsession for smelly stuff that is crazy expensive... =) err, well maybe smelly frilly stuff for women is like computer stuff and boxes with das blinken lights for us men =)

and I don't see much demand for the Amish/Menonite place...

    Trader Joe's would be awesome...

Fry's/MicroCenter would be nice (it's nice to see them changing to a DIY store and actually have decent prices on RAM/CPUs/MB)... but I still usually just order everything online. So, maybe Newegg can open a retail store here... ;) It's funny how NewEgg has gone from computer parts to just about everything imaginable that plugs into a socket.

RickyBobby: I think we should get a short track in Ashburn.. shake and bake?!

Oh, and put a casino in instead of the hospital ;)

More family oriented fun things to do...

A very large state of the art bowling alley.

    www.espnzone.com

    www.jillians.com or www.daveandbusters.com

Places for romance besides bars and hotels. Somewhere nice to take my wife for a stroll and then sit and enjoy nature under the star lights.
