If you're on Ridgeway heading from Claiborne toward the new shopping center (Teeter, et al) they have installed a new left turn lane. It appears to provide the ability to turn directly into....the woods. Specifically, the woods next to the SW pool. What is this for? Are we losing those woods?

In response to my inquiry on what the new lanes are for I got the attached. Looks like the entrance to the comercial area (which is located on the smae side as the townhouses will use these new lanes in the future.

    [Quote:]
We have removed the existing entrance that was just past the tree line going east on Wynridge on the right and the median crossover. We added a median crossover and a new entrance just past this for the future entrance into Section 208, which is a commercial section. We have one more to add closer to the townhouses just past them on the right side. This is right across the other new median divide. This too is for an entrance into Section 208 commercial site. [End Quote]

Hope this helps - but I'd think this means some of the trees on the side of Wynridge where the new commercial property is going will be gone.

You know this ticks me off. When developers leave these beautiful small wooded areas and then blam all the trees are gone. We could look at the master plan and know that is future commercial development, but they should be made to put up signs on all future development so when traveling to that model home park people would know that group of trees will be gone someday, so they do feel deceived later.

Even tho I am in this business I take a different look at things then most in my business. Personally as I have said over and over a smart growth Loudoun is not enough it has to be combined with a BEAUTIFUL growth Loudoun. Yes there can be beauty in high density and suburban and rural. Parts of Santa Monica Ca by the ocean is an example of beautiful high density just in case someone wants an example. :)

Oneof the reasons I bought the lot I did was that the trees/wild lands in front will never change - Army Corps of Engineers Wetlands!

Dang - now y'all know which house to TP.

The wetlands won't disappear, however you'll still have (depending on the size of the wetlands) about 10 to 15 feet of tree/wetlands left.

I read in the Loudoun section of the post last week that VAN METRE plans to build a 26,000 Sq Ft Design and sales center on the land across from the new center on Wynridge. Um..."Say no more. Say no more" Courtesy of Monty Python....

Speaking of turn lanes... there is one NEEDED on LCP. I was coming down that way (headed toward Verizon) and was turning left onto Shellhorn. Being in the left lane with cars behind me, I signaled ahead of time and began to slow down. I still almost got rear-ended. It's stupid not to have a left turn lane there - especially when people build up speed as they come down that "hill" after crossing over the Greenway.

Guess I'm off to contact VDOT now.

That intersection is a death trap! I've witnessed two accidents there in the past 30 days. Going from Shellhorn to LCP turning left is probably THE scariest thing around! They need more than a turn lane - they need a light there.

    Why is that scarey?

Going from Shellhorn to LCP North you have your own lane! At that intersection, LCP goes from 2 to 3 lanes. You don't even need to wait for traffic coming North... just be sure no one is turning ONTO shellhorn like SarasMom is describing and of course waiting for LCP south traffic. Unforunatly that intersection backs up when people don't realize you don't have to wait for LCP north traffic...

She's talking about coming North on LCP to turn onto Shellhorn.. because LCP traffic is coming over a hill, and she is decelerating while still in the traffic lane, there's the potential.

Sarasmom.. that intersection is really wide.. I'd move a bit into the 'open' area rather then keeping my rear in the travel lane for exactly the concern you mentioned! :)

    Hrm.... why is it "Scary"?

Well, (while on Shellhorn) traffic coming at you from the left is on a long, flat run with a visually scattered backdrop effectivly camoflaging incoming cars (hence accident one).

Folks coming from the right seem to think it's OK to either turn with no signal (hence accident 2) or just drift over in to that lane which is supposedly reserved for us left turners.

I stand by my assertation that a light is needed there, and I think all of the participants in the two cited physics lessons would agree.

I'm more for educated drivers then over-signaled roads personally.

Traffic coming from the left you can see unobstructed for probably a half mile.

As for the people coming North.. yes, you must watch for those coming into the intersection.. and of course never try to drive along side anyone (which is just defensive driving 101).. but I have no issues with it.

I have more issues with those who still can't figure out 4 way stops or the concept of merging requires ACCELERATION :)

you nailed that one. plus the rule that the left lane is for passing, not for crusing along blocking traffic!

I thought the left turn lanes installed on wynridge that go to nowhere were just some sort of wacky u-turn lane.
