What's up wtih "Call Ahead" Seating?

    I've been going out to restaurants for 30 years now and have never encountered "call ahead" seating. I tried to make a reservation at Vintage 50 in South Riding and then Blue Ridge Grill. In each case, I was told that they do not accept reservations but instead accept "call ahead" seating based on my phone call on the day that I want to dine (just 1-2 hours prior).

    Does this system work or could be I left with nothing?

    it works- it's just like standing in line while you drive there. your wait time includes getting there instead of STARTING when you arrive! I've typically cut a 45 minute wait to 5 minutes using it.

    I think more and more restaurants are doing this because people will often make a reservation and not show and/or not cancel. They end up losing money.

    Great American Restaurants uses this method and I love it. Works great.
