well like Koasdad says, every year when the colder weather comes my daughter gets nosebleeds - wakes up with them. we were late setting up the portable one in the upstairs foyer this time around. It does seem noisy but we don't run it full blast at night so it is like white noise. We run it full blast the during the day we first turned it on, then half thereafter. We did put a small desk top one in her room which stopped her issues. Also we have wood all over the house and the trim steps, piano, antiques, etc. My piano tuner said 45% is necessary for all the wood. it makes a big difference and we can feel it. but like I said the second unit is needed. SO you have to fill it every 3 days. no big deal, we've got a big tub and the utility sink.

We just had to have a whole new heating and cooling system installed in our house of only ten years:mad: so we had an aprilair whole house humidifier installed as well. My husband is thinking that we are going to see a big increase in our water bill, has that been anyone else's experience?

we put a house humidifier in last year...and we didn't see an increase in the bill..which i was surprised watching the amount of water that thing pushes through. Since they bill by the 1,000 gallons, maybe it increased one tick....but it wasn't sizeable enough to notice. can't be worse than watering lawns during the summer....

I installed a whole house unit after we moved in. I keep it cranked to the max setting. It helps, but the indoor humidity does not get anywhere near 45%. When it is cold, it will be at best 30%. I am convinced this is due to the very drafty house - cardboard sheathing and no housewrap. We had a humidifier in our previous house in Chicago. That house was not as drafty and kept the humidity inside to the extent that I had to watch the condensation on the windows and regulate the humidifier setting.

The sad thing is that along with the humidity that blows through the cracks also goes your heat and $.

We are looking to install a Whole house humidifier. Can anyone tell me how much it cost to install one? I was quoted $800 and was wondering if I was getting ripped off.

So if I am looking for a humidifier for one room (bed room) and I want a really quiet one, what are some recommendations?

If $800 is the unit AND installation, you're OK. What brand? And get the "largest" unit the duct work can handle - See Jim's post, above.

Ozgood - depending on the size of the room Walgreens sells some table top models that are fine. If you have a larger bedroom, put it near you (like on a night stand) and you'll be fine.

$800 is a reasonable price. I'm trying to locate my receipt, but I believe we paid about that amount.

We ended up getting a hallway humidifier unit for the upstairs as well and I still can't say we saw a big difference.

Is a hallway humidifier just a large portable one that can handle several rooms or is this built in your hallway?

Portable one that was in fact VERY quiet and it handled the four bedrooms upstairs (even with the open hallway layout).

It was the one L0stS0ul recommended. We haven't had problems with it, but the extra parts to it can get expensive. Since we put it up at the same time we installed the whole house humidifier I can't say if that in fact worked for our kids' constant nosebleeds, but I can say that it is VERY quiet. We'll set it up again this winter regardless.

We put one in last year and it is great. We used this company called Climatic. They are really good. It is a family run business out of Middleburg. Sunny is the man we work with, he is a good friend of ours as well. We had him look over the entire house. We feel so confident in their work and would recommend them to anyone. 800-560-8609 is their number. You can tell them we referred you if you like, gardecki is the last name and once again Sunny is great!!!

We used that one for the last few years I think. It's worked well but as Luftinarr says the parts are a bit expensive. I bought a bunch of filters last year after the season was over when they were having a sale.

Target sells this large bottle of antibactrial additive for humidifiers that works really well and helps the filters last longer. I picked up a few bottles of it last year when the season was ending. Now if only I could find the bottles lol . We always end up with the pink gunk from the water killing our filters so I've been considering this year putting in a whole house water filter for many many reasons (not just the humidifier :conf3:). It always freaks me out a bit when my water here in loudoun county is so bad and my parents get the cleanest water from their well down in Warrenton. Oh how I wish I had their chemical free water. I recently gave them our old GE fridge and my dad was complaining that the water coming out of the water dispenser smelled like chemicals. It was so bad he would not drink the water until they got a new filter and the smells went away lol. :fever:

@Kaosdad ---> Thanks...the brand is Aprilaire 700...the total now comes to $850 installed including additional accessories that are needed in addition to what is included with the humidifer.

We live in a Courtyard SFH...do you guys think the above humidifier can handle the square footage...roughly 3500?
