We reported this to the owner of New Vision last night and are still awaiting a response.

Correct me if I am wrong on my dates.... but was Monday one of the official days for picking up the trees? Clearly this was the action being taken all over the community... I saw them in 2 locations putting the trees in with the regular trash. I just did not have a note to myself that this was one of the days for christmas trees.

And at the end of the day, are we just "reporting" this or do we actually keep track of complaints and performance like this and use it in our evaluation and contract negotiations with trash vendors? Maybe I am just fooling myself but I still find it hard to believe that they are doing anything more than throwing this stuff all in the dump eventually.

Yes we do keep track of complaints and that is one of the reasons we starting with a new trash contractor on April 1, 2009

Yes, Monday was a designated day for tree pick up.
And while walking my dog yesterday afternoon...i saw no less than 5 trees go into the truck with the regular trash.

Ashburn Village uses New Vision but has separate pickup days for yard waste, trash, and recycling. It seems like that works better than the Broadlands multiple pickup days. I hope your new vendor keeps the pickups separate!

I thought that a number of vendors picked everything up and then took it to a sorting center, where the final disposition was managed. Is that what New Vision does?

It would be really helpful if people bought a ball tree, instead of one "grown" for purposes of one month's decoration and then mulched. Just my 2 cents...

Can trees like that be planted here in the winter time or is the ground too cold? Regardless of temperature, with all the clay in the ground around here I've found it very difficult to dig a hole for a plant, let alone a whole tree. That might involve paying someone to plant it for me. Good for the environment, bad for my finances. Or maybe I'm overestimating the time/effort/expense involved in planting a tree.

yah, you have to dig the whole in October. Or slip the Verizon digger dude a $20 to dig a whole for you.

I guess I'm confused about why this is a big deal. How is it a bad thing for a Christmas tree to be put into regular trash and eventually taken to the landfill? Its definitely more biodegradable than a bag of trash.

I think they're supposed to be shredded for mulch rather than taking up space in the landfill.

And if they're just going to the landfill...then there shouldn't be any special pickup days. Just put your tree out on any normal trash day. Same with grass, bushes, leaves...whatever. Chaos. Anarchy. Dogs and cats living together. Mass Hysteria!

i put mine out this past thursday---it went with the regular trash and i'm okay with that. My point exactly---it's going to rot away faster than the diapers that were in the trash can! as far as the mulch goes---i've gotten the free mulch from a dump before when i was in ffx county---worst mulch i've ver gotten..full of bugs and who knows what else.

That raises an interesting question: Has anyone else bought mulch from the county to know the quality of it?
