    Hi all,
what's the rule in Broadlands about yard sales? For some reason I thought they were not allowed, but I read forum posts about them and see signs on occasion around the community....
    Thanks!

The only rule I have seen regards signage and that's to take them down as soon as the sale is over.

Yard sales are allowed. As Kaos said, please remove your signs when done.

I say there is a shortage of garage sales around here. Please Broadlands and Ashburn residents, be better about advertising them. A little advice, please have more!!

For a shopper it is difficult to find them without driving all around the city to find them. If you are going to tape a sign to a pole use neon poster board that lists the sale time and day and street in BIG BOLD BLACK SHARPIE.

I do check on a few websites but compared to, let's say northern IL, this area does not advertise properly, resulting in lower sales turnout. In northern IL the newspaper is contacted and lists on average 30 sales in the spring and summer. Of course there are many on Thursday, Friday and Saturday there.

Here there seems to be most on Saturday only. For those trying to have sales on Sunday please don't. That is a morning you are supposed to be in church!

I grew up in NJ and we had a yard sale 2x a year and always got rid of a ton of stuff. It was fun, and people were excited hunting for treasures. But around here my experience has been very different. I've had 2 or 3 of them since moving to Broadlands in 1996 including one last year on the Community Yard Sale day. It seems to me that everyone wants everything for free and its obnoxious. I have some NICE stuff. If I wanted to give it away, I would. Don't walk up to me and offer me $5 for two sets of matching ELFA maple shelving systems....Yeesh. I sold a NEIGHBOR a cute Pottery Barn old style black cradle phone that cost $40 for $2 and her parting shot to me as she walked away was "It better work or I want my money back!" Yo, lady, you're my neighbor..I'm going to scam you with a bad phone for $2?

The prices for garage sales are expected to be 10% of the purchase price/full price. Some people do not know this. It has been mentioned in several articles. Some people think they can sell an item for the big bucks. That usually means they are emotionally attached.

Yes, bartering/negotiating is probable at a garage sale. If the seller does not like the price he or she can compromise in the middle or be stuck with the item.

I recommend you appreciate early birds. You may be able to close early. Don't bring out new stuff later on in the day. Your best shoppers may be already gone.

we just donate everything... less hassle for us and hopefully it ends up with someone who really would benefit from it.
