How odd. The bags will not stay closed by simply folding. After compacting the yard waste down into the bag we fold the top and place a piece of masking tape to secure it. Napper if you leave the bag open then chances are the contents will spill out.

What's odd? The bags ARE closed. The spilling will be done through the bottom when they pick it up. Those bags rip VERY easily. We went through quite a few before we got it right. The thing is, we had our whole lawn dug out and sodded, so there's lots of soil. And soil is heavy. Especially after getting wet, which it will be by the time Monday rolls around.

In the newsletter, it is noted that Patriot has a weight limit for yard waste of 35 pounds per bag or container. Nonetheless, the paper bags do have their limit, too. The dotted line probably is not a good indicator for everything that you can put into the bad.

    • Leaves - probably good
    • Dry grass - probably good
    • Wet grass - not so good
    • Soil - really not so good
If you don't overfill the bags, then you shouldn't have to worry about the bags breaking or spilling. If there is an indication that the bag will rip or spill, use a second bag. I never have had to clean up a mess after the trash service picked up my yard waste bags.

Ok, so what would you do with wet grass and soil? It's been raining for days, so everything is WET. We're not talking about a little bit of stuff, it's a lot.

Wet grass and soil can still go into the bags, just not to the fill line. The fill line is a bit optimistic.

If the effort is too large for bags or cans, you may want to call Patriot for a special pickup or ask them for the best way to put the material at the curb.

Just make sure you don't use plastic bags. I've seen a number of them left behind after Patriot came by to pick up yard trash.

I did not know we could use containers for the clippings. We just bought 2 32 gallon from Lowe's that we are going to try out ~$13 ea. Should be much easier to get the clippings in those than the paper bags. Thanks for the info.

Just be sure to clearly mark the cans "yard waste" so there is no confusion.

I did this and they did not pick up the grass clippings. This is the second time my yard waste was not picked up. The clippings will go into the trash can for Thursday as it seems to be the only thing they pick up.
