Not really. A number of organizations with a specific cause are widely funded. Have they misrepresented themselves?

I received confirmation that I was removed from their list. I had also asked how I got on the list and they did not know. The email answer I recieved said it could have been from a referal from another resident.

That in it self does not seem ethical. I could send a list with all the people in my childrens' schools, scout groups, and anyone else for that matter if it is a referal.

I do believe that is how my household was added though due to the email accounts they were sent to!

I'm not talking about funding, which is a separate issue. I'm talking about their organization name misrepresenting their actual membership.

(The following is simply an example, and not based on any true numbers)
If an organization called "Concerned Citizens of Broadlands" claims a membership of 500 people, would most people not assume that 500 Broadlands residents are part of their organization, and as such, opposed to the hospital?

I don't know how much clearer this needs to be for someone to see the mis-representation...

No responsible organization should be using email addresses which they have no idea how they acquired.

Two scenarios here;
  1. They know how they got the addresses but are using the 'referral' answer as a loophole/cover story.
  2. They grab email addresses that anyone gives them and add them to their list without the owner's consent.
Both these scenarios are 'irresponsible/bad business' if you ask me...

I would like to know how many people received the email today from Rebecca after you had previously requested to be removed. I refuse to use their new opt-out link since it asks for more information than just email address and appears to me to be a way of collecting information rather than removal from a list. I never gave them my email address, have requested to be removed now 3 times and no, my email address would not have been forwarded by any residents, etc. Is the HOA officially conducting an investigation into how the email addresses were obtained?

In my reply to Donna's last email, I asked that my email address be removed from the list. She confirmed that it had. We received Rebecca's email yesterday.

My additional question on the procurement of the email adresses is, these emails are coming to our relatively new Comcast account. We received emails also under the old Adelphia account. How did they get both addresses? The addresses are different than just the adelphia or comcast suffix. There was an effort to keep the addresses up to date that I was not involved with.

The HOA does maintain an email data base. We do not share personal information such as phone numbers or addresses without a resident's permission.

That is how we would expect it to be done and I don't think people are insinuating that the HOA was complicit. However, I think the question is if the HOA is looking into whether someone gained access to the data without permission and if so, who that person is.

Whether the "Concerned Citizens" gained access to email addresses from school directories, cub scouts, brownies, or some other non-HOA entity is a separate question.
