If you don't need to trade anything in, we have found that you can get the best price without the hassle or haggle by calling all the dealers within a 60 mile radius, given them the info on what you're looking for and asking for their "out-the-door" price. We always tell them that we are calling other dealers and that we are ready to buy if the price is right. We have managed to get some great deals that way-and the differences in price between dealers always amazes me... Good luck on your purchase!

We bought a Highlander Hybrid from Ludwig at Leesburg Toyota a few years back. He was very professional and non-salesy (if you know what i mean). Orginally, I was going to buy a prius and then switched because I needed more room for hauling kids. Good luck.
My husband just bought a car yesterday from CarMax-- that was a smooth experience as well.

Thanks for the responses. We test drove one at Leesburg Toyota and they seem to have the most selection of the Prius of the local dealers (VA, MD).

I have submitted inquiries through the AAA buying program and the Costco buying program. The Costco one is supposed to be haggle-free so we'll see how that goes. We don't have a trade in, know what options package we want, and are flexible about the exterior color. So it's just a matter of the right price. We also did the Consumer Reports new car buying report so we know the invoice costs on the car and options. We shouldn't have to pay more than $23,000 for a Prius with package 2 - we should be able to pay slightly less than that for a great deal, but at $23,000 we won't be getting ripped off, anyway.

Waiting until the end of the month would help the deal, too, but we've started the process and will see what happens.

One warning Deb,
We found out the hard way that you need to contact AAA or Costco first as the dealerships have certain salespeople that do those deals. We test drove a car (we didn't buy) at Pohanka in Chantilly and that was not with the Costco guy, they both seemed a bit ticked off when they realized that they were both trying to sell to us and didn't like it at all when Kaosdad told them to bargain against each other. so months later only the Costco salesman calls back. I tell him I didn't wnat that car and am still looking.

And lastly. We had to rent a SUBURBAN in order to pack up our son from VATECH!

Thanks for the info. I went through the Costco and AAA websites and received an email from Costco stating to bring the email with me to the dealership and who to ask for, so I think I'm on the right track there.

AAA's auto buying program hasn't impressed me but I'm not sure the guy at the dealership gave me the AAA price. I plan to visit the AAA store in Lansdowne and talk to someone about their program.
