Nature Center

Summer Camps are provided at the Broadlands Nature Center through the Audubon Naturalist Society.

The Broadlands Nature Center offers year-round programs to the residents of the Broadlands.

The Nature Center is open Monday-Friday from 9am-5pm and three Saturdays per month from 10am-2pm. Please check the community marquees or call the Nature Center for Saturday dates.

Tuesday: 9:00 AM- 5:00 PM
Wednesday: 9:00 AM-3:00 PM
Thursday: 11:00 AM-5:00 PM
Friday: 9:00 AM- 2:00 PM

The Audubon Naturalist Society and the Broadlands HOA have partnered to provide nature programs for the community. To register, call the HOA office at 703-729-9704 or email naturalist@broadlandshoa.com to reserve your place in the program. We are outside for most programs, so please dress appropriately and wear sturdy shoes.

Children's Programs

The Audubon Naturalist offers programs for Scouts, Families, Birthday Parties, After School, PreK and K, and Parent and Toddler Programs. 

Additional program dates may be scheduled if there is enough interest. For example, an early afternoon Pre-K and K class might be scheduled if the other classes fill up.

Spring Nature Programs

   

Wee Trekkers!
18 mos-3 years
Dates: Fridays 10:45-11:30a.m.  Start Date April 5th
Cost: $40 residents/$56 non-residents for 8 week session

Every week we will visit a different trail or park in Broadlands and share songs, stories and nature.  In inclement weather, we will visit the Nature Center and enjoy crafts, stories, songs and visiting the animals. 

Little Scientist
Grades 3-5
Dates: Thursdays 3:30-4:30p.m. Start Date April 11th
Cost: $30 residents/ $43 non-residents for a 6 week session

If you are looking for fun, exciting, hands on science activities you have come to the right place!  This program will help your child learn essential steps to experimentation.  We will do various experiments dealing with everything from plants and biology to chemistry and physics.  This is a wonderful learning opportunity to help your child get a better grasp on the SOL curriculum.  And of course we will be outside as much as possible enjoying the beautiful spring weather!

Wildlife of the World
Kindergarten-2nd grade for Homeschooled Children
Dates:  Tuesdays 10:30-11:30a.m.  Start Date April 9th
Cost:  $30 residents/$42 non-residents for 6 week session

Help preserve wildlife through education!  This program will allow children to learn about different exotic species, including the ones in our own Broadlands Nature Center!  The children will have the unique opportunity to handle a few of the animals.  What better way to learn about wildlife than active involvement!  Crafts, songs, stories, and outdoors will add to our fun!

Meet the Wiggly Hungry Worm
Date: June8th
Time: Noon- 1:00pm

Ready for some hands on fun learning experience!

Kids will have a chance to meet Wiggly Family and learn how they can eat almost everything and make something we feed to our plants. Wow!

Let’s set up our own worm composter and get a seed starter to take home.

The Bug Man
Date: July 13th
Time: Noon-1:00pm

“The Bug Man”, will showcase incredible and jaw dropping displays of world-wide insects, many of which are the largest species in the world!

This exciting program will introduce you to ecology and basic entomology of insects. You will learn about their importance, followed by their coolest defense strategies and life cycle.

Cost of Saturday Family Programs
1 adult and one child: $5.00 resident/$7 non-resident
Family up to 5 members: $10 resident/$12 non-resident
Additional family members: $2.50
Programs are one hour, residents and non-residents are welcome!
Sunny, our Corn Snake is fed at the end of each program!

Scouting at Broadlands

Audubon Naturalist Society at Broadlands provides an easy fun-filled way to earn your nature and wildlife badges.  We offer a variety of program led by our Naturalist.  Come and explore our nature center, pond, creek and experience nature up-close! Non-Broadland residents are welcome!

Participation is $5 per scout for a one hour program.  There is a $100 minimum requirement for programs to be held, and we will assist in coordinating troops to achieve the minimum. Please contact Alexandra Vlk if you are intrested.  The following badge programs are available:
