Important Storm Information

The following information was sent last night to residents who subscribe to Broadlands Blast. Use the form at the top of the sidebar on the right to sign up for these email notifications.

Plowing Streets
VDOT is responsible for plowing streets that are county maintained, while the HOA is responsible for plowing privately owned streets and parking lots and the developer plows streets in sections they are still developing.  If you are uncertain who owns the street you live on, please check out the street listing (or Snow Removal Guidelines at the right). It is very helpful for residents to park in their driveways where possible. This allows plows to clear the widest path on the street and reduces the likelihood of parked vehicles getting hit either by passing snow plows or by other vehicles traveling on slippery road surfaces.  It is also helpful to remove trash and recycling cans or other obstructions from the roadways.

Clearing Sidewalks
Residents are reminded to clear all sidewalks adjacent to their property.  Chapter 1022.01 of the Loudoun County Codified Ordinances requires that snow and ice be removed from sidewalks that are adjacent to publicly maintained streets.  Please do not shovel snow into the street.

Pond Safety
Playing, walking, skating, or any other activity is prohibited on all community ponds. There is no ice in this community that can safely withstand human weightParents, please tell your children that it is extremely dangerous, even deadly, to walk, play, or skate on the ponds in the community. Keep your pets off the ponds as well as they are equally susceptible to falling through and getting seriously hurt of killed.

Snow Stakes! Coming Soon To a Street Near You

As you may have noticed, the VDOT snow plows have made a bit of a mess of the main drags here in Broadlands. VDOT plows Claiborne Parkway, Broadlands Boulevard, and Waxpool Road/Truro Parish (among others). The large plows that are used on these main roads sometimes have a difficult time locating the edges of the roadways when they are snow covered, and they often run up the sloped curbs and onto the grass, skimming and damaging the surface of the turf. You can see the grass divots as you drive throughout the community. HOA funds are used to restore this turf damage in the spring. In an effort to assist the plows in identifying the edges of the roadways and keeping them off the turf, the HOA will be installing snow stakes every 50ft along the main roads. These 6ft orange stakes will be driven approximately 8″ into the ground at the edge of the turf where it meets the curb. We expect the stakes to be installed in the next week and they will remain until the threat of snow has greatly diminished (generally mid March). In future years, they will be installed at the beginning of the snow season, likely mid to late November.
