I have plenty of RAM & a pretty good processor. It all went down hill last week with the service pack... Damn you VISTA

Here are the specs on my memory:
    4 GB Corsair Dominator DDR3 SDRAM 1333MHz OC'd(4 DIMMs)

    This is my processor:
    Intel Core 2 Extreme QX9650 (12MB,3.0GHz)

Been on the phone with dell, they agree it was the latest SP...

Yep have that at the office and forget trying to load updates, they take forever...plus the windows tile-ing is not as handy a tool as it seemed it would be...more like a pain in the bum. It also seems as if they made simple tools harder to find. Kind of like a hide and seek game. Still an XP fan, too.

Our teenage son is a "Mac Guy" and has recently converted us as well. I have to say it was a challenge at first, but I would not go back to the "other side". I love my Mac too!!

I also upgraded to a mac and I like it a lot. I still have my PC rig for my game playing, but for all my serious computer uses, the Mac is very nice to use

do Macs have more than one mouse button now? =)

I'm definitely up for trying one, especially since it's unix-based now. I hate how they are such a closed company, but that probably is why they can keep things a bit more reliable, less hardware to support, etc. I might try one of the "hackintosh" installs if I get some spare time!

No... they've actually gone to NO buttons now! :) Latest laptops have no button, but rely on finger gestures and clicking on the pad.

Contextual menus is still something that is in its infancy on the Mac compared to Windows unfortunately.

How about instead of bashing Vista, you tell us what exactly is going on with it and maybe we can help.

I run Vista fine. Its rock solid and by the far the best MS OS I've used, its far better than the buggy POS that XP is. I'm running the latest SP on 2 laptops, and they run great (and one is a Dell). One the laptops has only 1gb of ram, and runs it fine (just a little slow).

Can you provide some details on whats happening and what you are doing when it crashes?

On average, Vista gives me spontaneous reboots and BSOD crashes about every 2 hours (or less) of use. I've started recording the BSOD errors, most common is IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL. Windows "Solution Center" most frequently indicates the problem is hardware-related, and most commonly network-adapter related. Usually I'm doing nothing more than web surfing when it crashes, although--strangely--it also crashes a lot when I'm highlighting a block of text in MS Word (2002).

I've had some Dell techs (via chat) tell me that it must be a software issue (even though I've reformatted my hard drive and done a clean install of Vista and started having BSOD's almost immediately thereafter). Some techs have suggested a memory issue, while others insist it cannot be memory-related. I'm 1-year into a 3-year warranty with Dell and feel like I'm getting a runaround. I'd love for them to replace my system but I doubt I can get them to do that.

I'm at a loss. I've already wasted about 20+ hours chatting with Dell tech support about the issue and there is no solution in sight.

Could honestly be either. The best thing to do is this:

    Install Vista
Run updater and install the latest SP and fixes
Go to Dells site, and update everything you can - including your bios. Most importantly is to update your video drivers. MaximumPC did tests with vanilla Vista with default video drivers and vanilla vista with current video drivers and the stability was greatly improved.

I don't know if this will help much in pinpointing the problem, but Vista has a reliability monitor (I've only seen it a couple times) service that lists out errors. I'm not on my vista machine, but I think its in computer management > performance.
