I live on a corner lot and yes I got one of those green boxes, but the good news is it's all under ground. It's nothing more than a large green plate, which is hardly visible in the grass (except the grass around it is sod that Verizon paid for and it's mostly dead). Comcast has those ugly boxes scattered around. I always laugh at the people who try to hide them by planting things around it...but there's no hiding them

It is hot out there - a cooler with a case of cold water bottles and ice would go a long way to make nice with the guys that are actually doing the digging...

Just last week a friend of mine refused to have her front yard dug up by Verizon. Her neighbor, did as well. After some hemming and hawing, Verizon ended up running it under the street in her cul-de-sac. This was in Alexandria area of Fairfax County.

Could still be a while. They started on our (small) street on 08/27/08. Worked for one day, left, came back a month later, worked one day, left, haven't come back to finish. They do come out every couple of weeks and repaint the lines on the lawn.

They dug holes in my yard back in August then filled them back up. They haven't reseeded yet because they have to re-dig them and pull the cables.

Hey - has anyone who had the FIOS cables put in during August been contacted as to when they'll be live?

I would go ahead and try checking the availability via the fios webpage (www.verizon.com/fios) - My Neighborhood (Carisbrooke off of Waxpool) was put in around that time, and I checked and got installed last month. No one from Verizon ever let me know that they were active....

Good to know....I guess we're going to wait anyway...make sure they get the bugs out. My only complaint with Comcast is their prices...way to high!!

I just checked the website, and it's now available for me on Falling Rock Terrace. I'll have to research my options this weekend. I can't make heads or tails of what the new Comcast bill will be -- they changed the name and contents of my plan as well as the rates. It'd be nice to compare the two.

    Woo hoo! Choice!

Just a heads up; once you go on the website and figure out what you want, don't place your order online. Call the Verizon FiOS business line and place your install order with an actual person. You'll end up with a better price (there are promos currently in effect not represented on the site) and you will get exactly what you want.

Keep us posted if you place an order and let us know what packages you got and an approximate monthly cost.

    Thanks!

Right now I'm researching how to make Fios play nicely with my router. Verizon specifically says it won't work with an Apple Airport. Google results lead me to believe it can be made to work.

Does anyone have Fios working with an Airport router?

We signed up. Currently we have phone with Verizon, satellite with Direct and internet with Comcast.

    20 / 5 internet speed
    Fios TV extreme
    - 2 standard boxes
    - 1 Home media DVR
    Regular phone line

    First 3 mo: $124.98
    After 3 mo: $141.96

Install is on the 19th, we'll see how it goes.

There are a few options, what job do you want the airport doing? The FIOS router and do wireless also, but it doesn't do 802.11N.

Both. I don't currently have it set for N because my TiVo adapter can only connect to G. My iMac connects via ethernet.

It sounds like a little fiddling with settings might make it work. It sounds like I can connect the Airport Extreme to the Fios router if all else fails.

I don't see why an airport wouldn't work. Shouldn't matter what kind of router is it at all actually. From DSL Reports:

Can I use my wireless or an extra router along with the Verizon provided router? (#12506)

Most definitely. Using more than one router allows you to put your wireless router's antenna where it will best cover your house or property; allows you to use the printer port; allows you to hard-wire more than 4 ethernet devices into your LAN.

    Here's how:

    1. Reconfigure your old router to disable their DHCP functions and re-assign their LAN ports to | 192.168.0.2 | 192.168.0.3 | 192.168.0.4 | and so on. We're assuming you will leave your Verizon provided router assigned to port 192.168.0.1 and let it run DHCP to hand out dynamic IP addresses on your LAN as 192.168.0.100 | 192.168.0.101 | 192.168.0.102, ...

To reconfigure an old router you may need to temporarily hard-wire one of it's LAN ethernet ports to your PC and disconnect any other LAN or WAN ports.
Most routers are then configured by opening a browser and going to »192.168.0.1 and walking the menus. The default address for the Actiontec is »192.168.1.1 .

    2. Interconnect your routers LAN port-to-LAN port using any number of straight-through CAT5 runs and/or patch cords AND a crossover patch cable. (The connection between two LAN ports must have an odd number of crossover cables).

    3. Plug in, turn on and enjoy your LAN. All PCs, printers and other ethernet and/or WiFi (wireless) devices will appear on the same LAN at addresses 192.168.x.y and can share resources. Only your Verizon router will act as a NAT firewall.

I hear their DVRs are horrid (compared to TiVO and the DirecTV HD DVRs), but you can complain and they'll give you some free months. I heard they've added a lot more HD channels and are getting close to DirecTV's offering.
