Just curious about residents' experience with the Goodyear in front of the Ashburn Ice House. I made the mistake of going there only to subsequently discover that a LOT of people have 1) failed state inspections for somewhat unspecified reasons (mystery brake issues seem to be a trend), which of course they are HAPPY to fix at an absurd cost or 2) not been provided with "free" services promised or 3) been told they need repairs beyond initial estimates (i saw this happen to TWO customers as we waited in the lobby!). Some free advice - AVOID the place!!!

I have heard of some issues there but since I hear about issues about pretty much every car repair place it's hard to know what's legitimate and what isn't. For what it's worth, we take our cars to the Goodyear by the Ice House and have had nothing but good service.

If there were a good small place where the owner truly had a stake in providing good service we would try to go there. Big chains can be hit or miss.

Is it a Gemini Goodyear, or affiliated with the one in Reston by Plaza America, then you are correct, stay away. I went to the one in Reston and my 3 year old car failed inspection cause of brakes and bad struts? Took the car back to dealer to get warranty work done, guess what, brakes still had 50% life and struts were fine. I went to another inspection place and passed with minimal issues.

I don't have problems with the Goodyear in the Village (by the Shoppers) but I only do my inspections there.

I recommend Fallon Automotive. It's run by Mike Fallon. He has a stake in the business!

Fletch, I am curious too about this and it is really strange that you posted this exactly when I started dealing with this problem. Our car failed inspection too this week. Now it is a beater car but the things that they seem to have found were a surprise since I had them inspect the car a couple of months before. The crack in the headlight, ok I can give them that. But when you make someone face about $800 in repairs on a car that cost $1500.... well that makes me think they are trying to pump oil from a dry hole. I am going to have to read up on the state inspection manual to see if the car can really fail for some of this stuff.... But I am not that excited to give them any more business at this point. The whole situation smelled a little bad from the beginning.

    I will keep you posted.

Coincidentally, I had a negative experience there this week and we have been going there for over a year, so I was quite disappointed. I just went for an oil change and they attempted to charge me $60!
Firstly, they had a coupon on their webiste which would not download or print, their webmaster didn't respond to my emails and the people at the store refused to honor. Secondly, they attempted to charge me for tire rotation which I told them going in that I did not want or need. Then they reduced the bill to $49, still outrageous for an oil change. Needless to say, we won't be gong back.
I like that it was convenient, they have stuff to entertain small kids while you wait, the free shuttle, but totally not worth the price and the poor attitude they displayed this week.
We'll be checking out Fallon, as the previous posters mentioned. Thanks for that referral.

I checked on Aphioni but couldn't find the review. I searched for "Fallon" and I looked under Automobile services.

    Same here.

They failed my car inspection a few months ago too. They said I have a loose driver side mirror. I know the side mirror is a little loose but they passed my inspection last year. Before that when I was in New York, it's always passed inspection. To fix the mirror it cost me about $400. Then they said something about a heat break on my rear brake. Not even sure what it is. So the whole thing ended up costing us about $1500 including an oil change.

When I got there to pick up my car they told me I need a new car battery soon. I also found out they performed work that I told them not to do. When I tried to use their coupons they told me I can't use more than one. I can only use a brakes coupon or an oil change coupon or a total off service coupon. I don't see anywhere on the coupons that said they can't be combined. If I had the work done on separate occasions then the coupons would be valid. I was in a rush to get my car back so I didn't argue with them.

Whatever they did to my brakes caused it to squeak and it smelled like burning rubber. So despite my rush to have my car back I ended up dropping my car off with them again.

In hindsight I should have gone to another shop to get a second opinion. Also I should have been warned when a few months before that they charged me about $1000 for my other car. I went in for a routine oil change and they told me my car is over 65K and needs some routine work done. Since I never had anything done to the car other than oil change, brakes and tires I agreed to let them perform those routine items. When I went to pick up my car they tried to get me to pay for them to clean my car battery terminals. I just wanted to pickup my car so I said no them.

Yea they pulled the tire rotation move on us as well about 3 months ago. Same story and getting charged for a service that was not asked for nor agreed is a quick way to lose business. It happened to my brother-in-law so I did not see that until after the fact.

I am talking to the Manager this morning so we shall see what he thinks about all this negative publicity.

Yes! My brakes smell like burning rubber now too, since I got my car back from them on Friday! We were wondering if it was just a coincidence, I mean all they were supposed to do was an oil change, not anything to the brakes. My car is fairly new and should not need new brakes at this point.
    Ggggrrrrrr!!!! So frustrating!!!! :angryfire:

M&E, what did they do to resolve the smelly brake issue?

Maybe it is just a silly idea, but did you guys check your parking brake? If someone was messing with it during an inspection or just in general, it is possible they did not re-set it completely and it may rub producing that smell.

    KPFamily,

Yes, they did resolve the issue. They said something about having the brakes on too tight.

From Rte 28, take Rte 606 west.
At the second light, turn right on what used to be Cedar Green Rd. (They just changed the name and I can't remember what it's called now).
Turn left onto Executive Drive, turn left onto Lane Ct.
At the end of Lane Ct, it's on your right.

There's a car repair place (can't remember the name) over by the Giant in Ashburn Village, that took care of me without issue. I only went there once, but it was 3 days before I was about to drive across the country. I woke to find that my car would cut out constantly (couldn't even make it to the end of the street). I feared the worst, but they checked EVERYTHING and found nothing wrong. They even offer me a ride home while they checked it out. If there was a time for a place to take advantage of a situation, that was it.

How very interesting. A company that does customer satisfaction surveys for Virginia Tire and Auto/Goodyear just called re: my visit there on Friday. I explained how dissatisfied I was and they said they would have the manager call me.
M&E, did they charge you to resolve the break problem?

Zeratul, let us know what happens when you speak with the manager today. Great idea. Also, I will check the parking break, thanks.
