Does anyone know the name of the property management company of the shopping center in Broadlands (Harris Teeter, etc.)?

I've almost been hit twice walking from the parking lot (near Bank of America) towards the grocery cart sidewalk at Harris Teeter from cars flying through at breakneck speed. This little corner is mad chaos...no stop signs, nobody knows who has the right of way, and I'm sensing it's an accident waiting to happen...and it was almost mine! Does anyone know who I can write to?

As much as I hate speed bumps.....

That's terrible. However parking lots have to be the most dangerious places to be. Very sad that drivers (and pedestrians) are not taking care of each other.

As for finding out who owns the property, sometimes on the big sign is little print. Or you can always just ask the manager at HT. I am sure they would know.

Good luck with this and keep a sharp eye out for the cars. They are not your friends :(

chatty cat---while you're sending them a letter--see if they can do something about the people who are too good to use the parking spaces in front of Dominos/UPS/Hunan Cafe/Dry Cleaners---the next car that is sitting there with it's flashers on is gonna get hit by me. There's ample spaces 10 feet away...yet they're too good to park, so they sit in the obviously marked NO STANDING lane.

And we know why speeders speed up when they hit the curve before Mill Run ES...you see it all the time on Route 7. It happens anywhere when people all of the sudden feel or see OPEN Space. you are no longer boxed in on both sides with buildings or houses, so time to have a leadfoot.

They also need to get signs up in the new Willages of Waxpool. Some peeps don't understand that it is a 25mph neighborhood....

multiple letters from different residents will likely get a better response and attract more attention than ONE...

Amen to that. Because as I was catching my breath after almost being sliced in half by that soccer mom in a mini-van jetting through Teeters, I then tried leaving the parking lot safely once again in my automobile, only to have mass chaos in the two way traffic cuz of some dude picking up his laundry...

I'm taking out his light next time...

This drives me nutty, as well. I go especially crazy when I see it at THE GYM. Can't manage to walk an additional 20 feet to park in a marked, legal, parking space? :angryfire:

Parking in a fire lane is illegal.

In the past I have stood in front of the car, taken a picture of the license plate with my phone, and called the Sherrif.

Generally when someone sees you taking the picture they come out and move.

Contact Eric Prugh at the LCSO as he is the community liason officer.

Call the sheriffs office, when I lived in Ashburn Village area they would walk the parking lot and ticket the cars that would do that.

The issue with calling the LCSO in situations like this is that the folks who park illegally by the fire lane, in front of the store, etc, usually get back out in 5-10 minutes at most. By the time the LCSO can respond, the offender is usually long gone. Call them enough times, and their response time will get longer and longer, since they sort of expect the offender to already be gone when they respond; it's human nature.

What I would suggest is that when someone sees this happening, you go into the business where the offender is and talk to the manager. Tell them that they should not let their customers park there under any circumstances and that as long as they serve customers who do this, they have lost your business and that you will encourage others to do the same. Tell them that you will be contacting the Broadlands Marketplace management and telling them that they allow their customers to do this. You'll be surprised how quickly the management of that particular store will take care of the situation. Place the burden on the stores who allow/encourage this behavior and not on the overworked and under paid LCSO officers... If a store allows this behavior and they start to lose business, they will quickly resolve the issue, especially in this economy where every customer counts toward their bottom line.

To early in the morning - I wasn't quite descriptive enough with my 'call the sheriff' post. After numerous complaints to the sheriff, they would come by during peak times (in the AM for the coffee people) and around 6pm in the afternoon if they weren't overly busy. We did not call them as it was happening (sorry for any confusion)

yeah but the other issue is making the parking safe and better organized as well. a few right of way or stop signs is THEIR (property mgr's)responsibility, not the sherrifs.

The martial arts studio is bad about allowing parents to park in the fire lane too. I almost got hit in my car when a parent was doing a u-turn to get in line for the pickup. I would have stopped in their office to complain that day, but I was running late and didn't have time. Next time I see it, I will say something. It's one thing to have one car for the dry cleaners and/or UPS, but 5-6 cars is ridiculous.

I would actually be surprised if the business would be able to do anything about this.

I am not sure your proposed idea would work.

You made the comment that the business is "let[ing] their customers park somewhere". How exactly is a business letting a customer park? A customer does not need the permission of a business owner to park in parking lot (the owner of the parking lot/mall grants permission)

You recommended a person contact the owners of the parking lot/mall and tell them that a business is allowing their customers to park illegally. How is this the responsibility of the business owner? How is a business owner allowing a customer to park anywhere while outside their business?

Unless the business owner is posting a sign telling their customers to park this way, it is the person parking who is responsible for breaking the law/ordnance, not the business. I don't see too many businesses posting signs requesting their customers break the laws.

Is it your position that a business owner is somehow culpable for the actions of a citizen?

I am not understanding your comments about how a business is "letting" potential customers park/drive incorrectly/illegally.

I am also not understanding how talking to the manager would help this problem.

So let's see how your idea might play out.

Ozgood: “Mr. Manager, I want to let you know that one of your customers was driving recklessly/illegally in the parking lot.”

Manager: “I am sorry Mr. Ozgood, I did not see that as I was working in my store.”

Ozgood: “I don’t think it is right that you allow your customers to drive recklessly/illegally in the parking lot.”

Manager: “I have neither control nor authority over people when they are outside my store, sir.”

Ozgood: “Well you should refuse to do business with people who drive recklessly/illegally in the parking lot.”

Manager: “Sir, I am in the business of selling coffee. I can’t monitor the parking lot outside my store. If you have a criminal concern, you really need to call the police.”

Ozgood: “If you don’t stop selling coffee to people who are driving recklessly/illegally in the parking lot, I will stop coming here and I will try to get my friends to stop coming here.

Manager: I am sorry you feel that way, sir. But I really have no control over what people choose to do when they are not in my store; just as I have no control over whether you choose to boycott my store.”

Not seeing how this can help the problem.

Is it reasonable for a business owner, in these economic times, to tell a customer, "Please don't give me any money because you are parking/driving incorrectly." Frankly I don't think too many struggling businesses would do that.

Any citizen is, of course, free to boycott any business for any reason they wish to. And they are free to attempt recruitment of other potential boycotters. I think this would be unfair to the business which is really not doing anything wrong.

It would be equally unfair to hold a business accountable for the illegal actions of a customer unless we are granting this same business authority over the actions of a customer. And I don't think we would want that.

If someone is breaking the law (parking/driving illegally) the only correct action is to inform law enforcement.

I almost got over by the lady who works in the dry cleaners in that shopping center (maroon minivan). It was a really great, easy way to lose my business. Oh, and she proceeded to park in the very closest spot to her store. Maybe that's why people are parking in the fire lane-the closest spot is taken by the store worker.

A really long way of forgetting that the property is managed privately - by an organization whose job it is to answer to the owners and tennants. If the businesses don't mind, why would the management company?

Without it being a problem for the businesses - there is no motivation for people to do anything about it.

It's really just a sign of the attitudes around here.. not that we need any new reminders.

Like the guy who tried to pass me in front of Wegmans (in the opposite lane no less) as I stood stopped at the CROSSWALK waiting for someone to cross. Freaking geniuses around here.

Ozgood, I don't have the time nor the energy to go into a discussion about this with you. I gave my opinion, and you disagreed. I'm done here.
