Illegal Sign Removal - Volunteer Program

I subscribe to the Loudoun Announcements and this interesting announcement was sent out today. I want to share this with anyone who also dislikes road signs and wants to do something about it.

Loudoun County recently entered into an agreement with the Commonwealth of Virginia obtaining approval to remove illegally placed signs from within the right-of-ways located in the county.

The Code of Virginia prohibits advertising within the limit of any highway, which includes the roadway, shoulders, and median strips. Penalties for placing such illegal signs can include the removal of the advertisement, a $100 fine, and having to pay the costs of removal. Businesses that routinely place illegal signs in right-of-ways could be subject to injunctive actions through the court to prevent their continued placement of illegal signs.

Loudoun County is using existing staff resources for this effort and is also issuing a call for volunteers to supplement the program. Before a volunteer is eligible to collect illegal signs, the volunteer must attend an orientation/safety briefing and agree to adhere to the program guidelines. The first briefing will be held on Monday, April 27, 2009, at 6:30 p.m. in the Board Room of the Loudoun County Government Center, 1 Harrison Street, S.E., in Leesburg.

The pilot program will run through June 30, 2009, at which time staff will report back to the Board of Supervisors on the effectiveness of the program efforts and will receive direction on continuing the effort.

In addition to the call for volunteers, the county is also requesting cooperation from the private sector in curtailing the placement of illegal advertisements along the county roadways.

do you know the link to the actual county code for this?

We had some realtor put some signs on VDOT land on our street. When I questioned him about it he gave me a story about it being legal on the weekend. Sounded fishy to me but without the code I did not know if he was right or BSing me.

 

i think our hoa allows realtors to put their signs up in our neighborhood on the weekends. personally, i think it is neighborly to allow them up on the weekends...wouldn't you want a sign up if you were selling/looking for a house in our neighborhood? the quicker it's sold, the better off the value of our homes...my 2 cents.

 

Now Ozgood I did ask your permission to put that sign up...I never BS. Good news, that house on Middle Ridge is under contract, so no more signs. If anyone has a problem with a sign I put up just call the number on it and I'll be happy to take it down.

I consider myself a sign nazi, but when it comes to real estate signs, I think open house signs when used in moderation and only for a short couple hours are fine. As for the all weekend developer signs etc. Tear em down and burn them!
