Need Advice Cakes

I am hosting a baby shower and after looking online at specialty bakeries (a little fancier), I am wondering if going with a store cake (Wegmans, Giant, Costco) because it is a bit better for my budget would I would suffer quality. Has anyone gone with a store cake and had regrets? Any advice or any suggestions for a particular vendor? I searched older threads but they are well over 6 months old, so I am looking for something more recent.

 

I've never had a bad cake from Costco and I'm pretty picky about the cakes I make in my own house. The actual cake is moist, you have a choice of fillings and the icing doesn't taste like straight Crisco mixed with confectioner's sugar. That said, the last cake I had from them was almost a year ago...

We had a small birthday cake once from Safeway and were quite disappointed in the quality on all fronts.

 

I almost always get a cake from Costco for everything from birthdays to office events. Never been disappointed. Last month I got a cake from Wegmans for my daughter because the Costco one would have just been too big, very good but it was twice the price for half the size (I got a Hello Kitty one so it was extra)

 

Edibles Incredible in Brambleton- delish. NExt to Johnny Rockets. NOT Incredible Edibles- totally different place.

 

You will definitely not be disappointed with a Wegmans cake, the quality and taste are great! If you want to splurge on fancy and more pricey, Cafe Rumi rocks!

 

I have to agree the Costco cakes are pretty darn yummy.

I had a cake from Chantel's Bakery for my baby shower because several folks have food allergies - so my blueberry cake/lemon cake was a; gluten free, egg free, fat free & sugar free...it SO YUMMY and WOW!!!

 

I would NOT use Wegmans. I ordered a cake for my son's 1st birthday two weeks in advance - simple sheet cake with an image on it scanned from a picture. The information the sales person provided me was incorrect and they could not do what I had asked - simply center the image on the cake - so of course when I went to pick it up it looked nothing like what I had ordered. Secondly - they did not have it ready an hour after our agreed pick up time so I still had to wait.

And to top it off - once I finally got it, they did not tape the top of the box to the bottom like most logical people would do and it blew off when I was in the parking lot and the cake fell out of my hands smashing onto the asphault!

I will NEVER order a cake from them again. This was not a usually busy time - middle of February - So in my mind there was no excuse for that service. I did go to the Mgr and get my money back but still it put quite the damper on such a wonderful day.

 

I second Chantel's. They do GREAT cakes and are very good. Probably won't help you if you're trying to go the inexpensive route though.

 

I have never had a bad cake from Costco. Their quality is very good and you get a big cake for less than what other places charge for a much smaller one.

 

If anyone at the party is allergic to nuts do not let them eat the cake, as they do have nuts back in the bakery. We have found this with almost all of the cakes purchased in this area.

We used to always get our cakes from Costco - very yummy and you get a lot for your money. But since the kids got into theming for their parties, we've always gone to Wegmans. Never a problem and in fact they really impressed me last February when they called me the day they got a new design in stock, one that I desperately needed. We usually get a 1/2 chocolate 1/2 vanilla cake, which is a nice option. They do offer fillings and you can get a little more extravagent, but we've only done kids cakes.

Not that this helps appetites--but my wife made a diaper cake as a decoration for a baby shower...and it went over great!!!

 

Last year we got a birthday cake from the Target in Leesburg (they have an on-site bakery) and it was very good. They were able to take a picture I gave them (printed from the internet) and use it for the decoration on top of the cake. The cake was tasty enough to earn compliments from the adult guests.

 

We 3rd Chantel's - only use them. they did a great Sponge Bob cake for a joke cake when son turned 19! They laughed so hard when we told them we wanted that. they were happy to see that someone that age woukd like it. It was amazing! they frosting was white - but they did blue and green waves.

 

How can that even be called a cake?

I like the cakes from Wegmans, Shoppers and Costco (in that order). Wegmans is outstanding and they do great work!

 

was it just a pile of lemons and blueberries? =) seriously, how is that possible and still be called a cake? The blueberries and lemons have sugar...

 

I got a cake in Nov for 40th birthday party at Channtel's. It was delicious!!!! and beautiful. I got an 18 inch round - i think. We had about 30 people and still had 1/2 cake left. not skimpy pieces either. it was $64 and I had special instrustions for decorations, so that ran me a little more. Got a sweet 16 cake in Jan. again it was perfect in every way. they cost more that the grocery store but for something special, i think worth it! (had a hard time with there web site tho)

 

Ref Themed Cakes:
I get the Costco cake and then I purchase the desired (& washed) little plastic characters separately and place them on the Costco Cake (the Balloon design works best for this). I save beaucoup $$ on the cake and the little plastic dudes become part of the toy collection. It has always worked out great!
