    Hi,

Could anyone recommend a good company for servicing our AC and heating units? How much is a reasonable cost for a service?

    Thanks.

We use RA Dobson to service ours and have been happy with them. I *believe* it's around $200 a year, but my memory is foggy with this pregnancy!

I would check the Broadlands Newsletter. Climatic is a new advertiser and they had a couple coupons this month

We used Bowmans for a humidifier installation and are very happy... and they were very affordable

Does anyone see a value of doing this on a service contract (2 times a year)? I have two units for my home and each a/c unit is 175.00 a year (serviced twice). I think my units are 6-7 years old and I wouldn't mind getting more than 10 years out of them (if possible). I am feeling like 2x a year might be overkill

What type of maintenance is performed? Our unit is ten years old, previous unit was 15 - never had them serviced. Once a year I take a wire brush and remove the dirt and grime on the vent slats and tighten the fan. I would be curious to know what else should be checked.

A maintenance agreement might be a good idea. I believe what they do is come out in the spring and fall and make sure everything is in working order. The twice a year probably is for A/C in the spring and heating in the fall? The idea is that having it checked *before* something breaks is good preventative maintenance. It may also give you priority when service calls are needed.

If you google air conditioner maintenance you may find what types of things should be checked. Maybe you can do them yourself. One thing I saw is what another poster mentioned which was to take the covers off (carefully!) and brush everything off to be sure stuff isn't covered with leaves and grass clippings and the like. You also want to be sure that any bushes surrounding the units leave about 12" between the bush and the unit so there is proper air flow. And change your indoor filters on a regular basis (every 1-3 months, I think) so that the units don't have to work extra hard.

DOminion Power is also offering a contact for $4.95 a month for servicing your furnace if it is, i think, less thatn 10 years old.

Michael and sons installed our whole house humidifier (Aprilaire) on a new Van Metre home and they came out for free to check it and show me how to change the water panel. Not sure if they only do this while under warranty though.
