We're looking for vendor recommendations to build our backyard deck and patio. Have you had a vendor that exceeded your expectations with reasonable prices? Thanks!

Just make sure that everything you want is spelled out in the contract.

When I was talking to our deck guy, I told him that I wanted the decking installed with screws and not nails. He ensured me that everyone uses screws these days. Not to worry.

Well when I came home from work, there was my deck with the decking installed with nails. When I complained about this, the contractor simply said "it was not in the contract, not my problem." Great :(

Another lesson learned - put *everything* is written in the contract. Don't believe what the smiling contractor says. After you sign the contract, all of a sudden he won't be smiling and will throw that contract in your face.

Ozgood-if you don't mind me asking, who did you use? I like to get feedback on local contractors. Basically I want to know who to steer clear of.

I would recommend Woodscape- they are building our deck/patio right now and they are extremely professional, fast, and their estimate came in several thousand dollars less than the other estimates we got. So far the deck looks wonderful, and the patio construction should start soon.

Kenny Williams did a great job on our covered deck, but damned if you can get a hold of him now! He gave us a three year warranty on the deck, but several phone calls to get some stuff fixed and he's MIA. I did reach them once and they said they'd be out on a Monday at 9.....they never showed. Never called. Never nothing! I called them several times after that (this all happened in March) and no return call from them. Rage. :angryfire:

    Deck Hands 703-623-2063

Tom owns the company and my husband works with him. We live in Broadlands and they built our deck along with others.

I can also HIGHLY recommend the Deck Hands. The quality of the construction is absolutely outstanding. All high quality materials (we used Trex) and the cuts, joists, supports and trim work are all perfect. The low voltage lighting system looks awesome so I highly recommend you consider adding this.

Tom is also an architect by training so his drawings and plans are a real benefit when working with him on the design and measurements.

    I recommend Dream Home Exteriors.

    http://www.dreamhomeexteriors.com/

We've used them for our patio and they did an amazing job and have supported us. Nathan Rowitz is absolutely great to work with. We liked them so much we used their parent company when we gutted our kitchen and redid the whole thing. I really like working with these guys. Top quality work at very reasonable prices.

We used Holloway (www.hollowaycompany.com) for our patio and they did a great job. I had gone through 5 different estimates and they were the middle of the road. They also did a couple of my neighbors' patios.
