We've lived here for a year, but we rarely eat out, so we haven't really tried a lot of the restaurants around here. However... I'm pregnant, so that's going to change ;) I love Asian food, but Chinese is usually on the bottom of my list. But, like I said, pregnant, so things change! I've heard great things about Anothai and My Thai Place, but what's the best Chinese in/around Ashburn?

Also, what's the best Vietnamese? I've heard that the Pho place near the ice rink is good, but our family is vegetarian (some seafood), so Pho is usually out for us. Can you get a good vegetarian Banh Mi out here? I lived on them during my last pregnancy.

Feel free to weigh in on other types of restaurants too-- you never know what I'm going to crave next! :p

Anothai is definitley good. if you want Vietnamese try Saigon Star by Safeway. Of course I normally get pho there, I don't know what they have as far as vegetarian selections.

If you ever crave some NY style pizza hit up Sal's across from safeway. Sal is a really cool dude.

My favorite Chinese restaurants are Cafe Opera (by the Dunkin Donuts) and Yens Cafe, near the Ashburn Home Depot (behind the Giant).

100% agree! Just tried Yen's recently and was blown AWAY by how wonderful the whole experience was. the Taiwaanese Meatball Soup was beyond fabulous- unlike anything I have ever tasted in an Asian restaurant. Service and atmosphere also get high marks.

Cafe Opera- an old favorite that never disappoints. the Singaporean Vermicelli is divine.

By the way- I am not a fan of Asian food- but these two places are suprior in my little book. I go when The Man and The Boy insist since they LOVE all kinds of Asian cuisines. They aso say that Saigon Star near Safeway is outstanding.

We actually tried Yen's tonight, mostly because they had an online menu. I thought it was okay. My spicy tofu and veggies wasn't actually spicy, but they actually have a vegetarian eggroll, which, let me tell you, is RARE! I did like that it wasn't as salty and greasy as Chinese sometimes is. I'd order from there again, just to see if some of the other dishes are more spectacular.

    Has anyone tried Callaloo?

I'd recommend Good Fortune in Ashburn Farm. They are in the shopping center close to Claiborne and Ashburn Farm Parkway, next to the now infamous Trevisio's.

They have an extensive vegetarian selection. Numerous vegetarian dishes, all prepared with authentic Chinese taste.

The place is usually empty but they are very busy with take out. Nice folks too.

Here's another local please for vegetarian:

Swagath Vegetarian Indian Cuisines, located in Ashburn Farm at the corner of Ashburn Farm Parkway and Ashburn Road. It's in the shopping center where Shopper's use to be. Same place where Goodyear and Buffalo Wing Factory is.

Swagath has very good authethentic Indian food. Everything on the menu is vegetarian.

Now if I have the time I'll always head into Leesburg to patronize Angeethi, but if you want close this place is good. Take-out available.

p.s. redon1, you should check this place out. I've only had dinner there, but looks like they also have a buffet at lunch.

Loved it when it was open, but it's been closed since January... too bad- it was wonderful.

Yen's Cafe off Ryan Road, near Home Depot is the best Chinese I've had in Ashburn by far! It does not taste like your average Chinese take-out and the service is outstanding. Their online ordering still has some kinks that need to be worked out, so I would recommend calling in.

    Congratulations on your pregnancy!!

Redon1, if you haven't been to Angeethi on Catoctin Circle you should try their lunch buffet. Unbelievable! They don't hold back on the selection. Numerous entrees, in fact to many to try. And they cater to the carnivores.

If you don't mind a short drive, Charlie Chiang's Restaurant at Worldgate Plaza in Reston is awesome. They have a huge buffet of all sorts of Chinese food, and a Mongolian grill where you pick the raw food for your bowl and they cook it while you wait. Take the Herndon exit, then hang a right into the Worldgate plaza.

The owner of Treviso's, Diane Atari, is on the run from the law. Reportedly out of the country on mortgage fraud charges. Her ex-husband is a cousin of Osama Atari, previous owner of The Original Steakhouse. Osama is also on the run reportedly out of the country.

We like "a taste of burma" in sterling. A little bit of a drive, excellent singapore noodles. Made the washingtonian best of.

Nothing beats Bangrak Thai in Ashburn for a truly excellent and authentic menu and consistently good food. We've tried many Thai restaurants over the years and nothing compares. Plus - it's local and independently owned.

Ooh, gonna have to disagree on this one. Bangrak is my #3 pick after my thai place and anothai. Hubby and son agree and they are big fans of thai cuisine, unlike me. All 3 good, all 3 different.

    I second Good Fortune.
The folks who run the place are SUPER nice. When they added a bunch of vegetarian items, they gave us complimentary "drumsticks" to try out because we had gotten into a conversation about where they get the stuff for the entrees.
We shop when we can at the Seventh Day Adventist store in Silver Spring because they have an extensive vegetarian food section which includes a lot of imitation things. When GF said they would have imitation pepper steak and a couple of other things I recognized them from what I used to get at the 7th Day Adv. store and they're VERY good. Expensive, but very good. It's nice to know that if I get a craving for it I can go there rather than wonder when's the next time I'll be out that way to the big store.
We've eaten in there before and although it's kind of weird to eat in a place like that, I would do it again. They really cater to you.
I hear this about Yen's Cafe as well. I got a smoothie there recently and it was like an entire process. Very worth the $5 or so that it was. I still haven't tried the food but hear good things. They were giving 20 or 30% off on carryout for their anniversary but that might not be going on anymore. I like the online ordering, I wish more places would do that. However if they did I"d probably soon end up with a bucket outside of my window that I could lower down for them to put the food in and then I'd lower it back down with a $5 tip ;)
    Congrats on your pregnancy!!!!!
I had been a lacto/ovo until I got pregnant with my son, then I started eating seafood again. It was a summer of crab feasts for us that year. Good times.

Oh wow! Thanks for the tip about the 7th Day Adventist store-- I had no idea! Of course, yeah, when am I going to be out that way? Maybe we should set up a co-op and send a different person out there periodically to pick stuff up for everyone else :)

Definitely try to make the trip some time.
My whole family is in the area there so when we visit, if I can afford it I try and stock up there.
Lately the prices have gone up SOOOO high and their sales are kind of a joke (like .06 off is a sale--I'm not kidding). However, there's nowhere else like it and the items they have are really great.
They have this "dinner loaf" thing that we buy on Thanksgiving that is so freaking good. It used to be $9, now I think it's above $12.
They also sell what we lovingly call the chicken log. It's this huge log of fake chicken and it's the exact same thing Chinese restaurants use in their mock chicken dishes. It used to be around $17 I think (crazy!) now it's above $20, even nuttier.
This is part of their site where they list the food that's on sale. Worthington is the big company there; they are a subsidiary of Kellogg's.
    http://www.potomacabc.com/food/food_onsale.asp
There's another company called Cedar Lake who makes the "logs" too but my sister bought one because they were WAY cheaper than the other brand but she says it was really horrible.
One thing they had that was so awesome was this vegetarian bbq jerky that was from China or Japan. They have a bulk section and sell it in small bags but you can buy a large bag of it. SO GOOD. I haven't seen it in a while though.
The place is interesting though. You see a lot of people buying things by the case. I have no idea how they can afford it!
They used to have many small stores scattered around the area but then they opened this big one. It's great that they did it, but then it makes everyone go to one place and it's not always convenient. Add that they're closed on Saturdays and close early on Fridays and it's even more difficult. It's in a good shopping center though, they have Target and Kohl's and that sort of thing, plus a few restaurants.
    I'm babbling.
    Go there!! :)
