So I realize that "I'll hardly feel it" and "you won't know you are on the water" etc. HOWEVER- HUMOR me- nothing will keep me from stacking the odds in my favor and using something to combat motion sickness on this- my first- cruise. I'm already suffering from a bit of vertigo so I'd rather not take the chance that nausea will ruin my vaca.

I hate taking drugs- they interfere with my drinking! lol [IMG] so no dramamine for me.

So I'm looking for opinions on the Bio Band or Sea band- the bracelets that I've seen online for motion sickness. Anyone ever used one? If so did it work? Thank you in advance!

Anything with Ginger in it will help you. If you can, take a small jar of Candied Ginger with you on the cruise. You can buy it at Safeway. Sometimes cruise ships will have it on board but you can't always count on that. The bracelets will help you. And I've heard of a new medicine that helps with motion sickness and doesn't make you drowsy. Wal-greens or Giant have it. The thing that will help the most is being able to get outside and be in fresh air and actually look at the horizon. That helps you find your balance again. Hopefully you have a verandah cabin or at least on oceanview cabin. If you are seasick an inside cabin is the worst!
    Bon Voyage neighbor!!!!

My wife and I have done 5 cruises (not counting the many cruises I did courtesy of the US Navy). She is prone to motion sickness and has only once had a problem--transiting the Bay of Biscay (off the cost of France), which is known for its bad seas and rough weather. The ship actually placed motion sickness bags at all the trash receptacles throughout the ship (though my wife didn't need one).

If you're going to be in the Caribbean, US East Coast or even the Meditteranean you'll be fine--go ahead and bring a bracelet or non-drowsy medication (e.g., Bonine) just in case, but I doubt you'll need it even if you're in an inside cabin. Unless, of course, you're near an Altantic storm/hurricane, then all bets are off. :)

Pats fan- I have a little vertigo lately and tend to get nauseous on ELEVATORS! lol something tells me I should just wear the dang ol' band. :) If we hit a storm I will self medicate myself into unconciousness so I don't die of a heart attack. death by drowning is my worst nightmare- I am actually a bit hydrophobic! (fear of water- not rabies... lol)

regardless, I am just stacking the odds in my favor by being prepared. LOVE the Giner tip mom2two, and your doggie is beautiful :)

I used Psi Bands on a cruise in December. Unfortunately, the waters were really rough. They had to close the pools, half of the staff was ill themselves, etc. I felt a little yucky - not nauseous but not quite right. So I ended up taking Bonine as well as wearing the bands. I felt 100% better.

So maybe the bands would have been good enough for me on gentler seas, but not on the rough stuff.

I would recommend Bonine over Dramamine since it doesn't make you drowsy. It did not interfere with my drinking one bit. ;)

    Almost funny "Dramamine" story:

Marianne and I were on our first cruise. It was an Alaskan cruise (highly recommend those!)

The ship's command announced that they needed to do some maintenance on the gyro stabilizer. Sure enough, it got a bit choppy and we started to feel just the tiniest bit queasy. Not wanting to take any chances of mal de mere upsetting our trip, we decided to take a precaution – Dramamine.

Salient fact: Neither of us had ever taken Dramamine before.

Shortly after taking the Dramamine, we both felt a bit tired. Well this was a pretty tiring cruise so far so we did not think much of it. “Let’s go to our cabin and lie down and perhaps take a short nap.”:indiff2::indiff2::indiff2::indiff2::indiff2:

We woke up about five hours later. When we described what happened to our dinner companions, they all laughed at us. We then learned about the “side effects” of Dramamine.

    Education occurred.

ha!!! all you need is 4 oz of water to clean your whole body...

btu no- it's truly a paralyzing fear of large bodies of water. anything bigger than a 20 man jacuzzi gives me the willies.

i even tried to get over it by white water rafting in the Alps, ubing at Harpers Ferry, and now this: going on a large heavy death trap in the ocean.

Redon - I feel your pain! I love fishing, but sea sickness kicked in when ever I lost sight of the shore...I knew it was a mental thing so I just kept going out till it didn't bother me that much...I've only been on one cruise and there was one day of really rough water, but I didn't get sick...but it was an adventure watching the waiters try to keep everything on the tray!

When I cruise I like to drink just enough to make the room sway in proportion to the ships motion. That way they cancel each other out!

Seriously though check out the blogs on the cruise lines site.

Here's a little food for thought the next time someone decides to take a cruise. Bear in mind, this article was published in 1992 and since then the number of ships has increased by numbers and girth. We personally saw video footage by a passenger of ship showing personnel dumping late into the night...tons of garbage.

This is one reasons I avoid cruises.

There's always someone who wants to spoil it for others huh? A friend of mine used a patch that went behind her ear and she was fine. Don't know if they sell those anymore. You should be fine though! When and where are you going? I think we're going on one in Jan., not sure yet.

I put zero stock in this article. It might have been relevant 15 years ago, but as KT aptly notes, that article was published in 1992. The cruise industry has come a long way since then (and not in the way KT implies). Watch any Travel/Discovery Channel show about cruise ships and you will see that they are being designed (and retrofitted) with high tech wastewater and waste handling systems to preclude the need for overboard discharge of anything but treated water.

i'm really looking forward to it! we go in october, Cozumel, Key West and Ft. Lauderdale ports. it's a short cruise- i had NO INTEREST in going for longer than a few days on my maiden voyage. L)

thought about the patch but i like the idea of the bracelet better for some reason- no worries about a rash or something peeling away.

i think between the ginger and the bracelet and am good to go- i'll report back to you all how it goes! :)

    From KT's 1992 article:
The cruise ship industry has adopted all of these recommendations (except for perhaps the gas turbine thing--a lot of the newer ships have GT engines but the older ones still run on diesel).

Don't let the curmudgeon's ruin it for you, Redon! You're going to have a great time!

thanks- i knew i ran that risk when posting in here... it's nothing that i will even pay attention to. my concern my vacation's impact on the environment is down there with my concern for a spider's feeling when i squish it to keep it out of the house... nnnnoooot HI PRI. or it's NO PRI. whatever you like.

that ship is going with or without li'l ol' me- i'm just trying not to ADD any organic material of my own off the port bow and into said ocean... hee heee!
