redon, i get every kind of motion sickness (yeah, i'm loads of fun to travel with!). i usually spend about 2 weeks a year on a sailboat in the caribbean. what works best for me is the sea bands (they do truly work!!), and the non-drowsy dramamine (it lasts 24 hours - i do know some people that get sleepy from it though - be warned!). and then there's always the rum ;-)

Hmmm...if you do the research on illegal dumping you could form an educated opinion instead of a baseless one. And what you will find are reports only for the cruiselines that got caught!

This is not a cruise ship "horror story", nor was it posted to dissuade anyone from taking a cruise. If people in the community are so "green" and interested in "recycling" and reducing your "carbon footprint" and are completely unaware that illegal dumping happens frequently, then we are truly living in a bubble.

If I wanted to post a horror story I would have posted about cruise ships being attacked by pirates...:rolleyes3:

I get violently ill when I'm on a boat or out in the open water, but depending on what kind of ship your cruising on, you may not need one. I took the sea band on our first cruise a few years ago, but I never needed it. Since then I hadn't used on any of our cruises. However recently out on the Chesapeake Bay, I didn't take one and well, you know what happened. If you going on one of the bigger boats, while you do feel a slight rocking (in the roughest of seas) you should be OK.

I know sea sick, my dad used to make fun of me when we'd go deep sea fishing, I was the dedicated "chumer"

Good luck and hope you have a good trip!

Bull-----. If that is one reason you avoid cruises, then you should consider stopping driving and buying items imported from China. They dump more crap in the sea than cruise ships and the oil tankers spill millions of gallons that go un-noticed. Lighten up Frances.

We were discussing the cruise ships, not industrial waste, sewage sludge, medical waste, pesticides from urban run-off, fertilizers, biohazard waste, dredged sediment, etc. but yes, they, also, are dumped into the ocean. The ocean is a dumping ground and always will be. The ocean is able to process certain kinds of waste but at the rate we're dumping, ocean ecosystems are collapsing and will not recover in our lifetime.

As for your personal comments, we all have to make choices whether morally or ethically right or wrong - hopefully they are informed decisions which is why I said the post was not to dissuade one from taking a cruise. It was informational only.

Obviously you took offense - so who should lighten up? ;)

We have been on 6 cruises in the last 4 years. I get seasick in certain seas and always take ginger root and Bonine. Wrist bands DO NOT work for me. It's only certain sea conditions that affect me, but I always take my meds starting the day before until the day after (twice per day usually). I feel fine and have no side effects at all. I can drink and enjoy our cruises. As for patches, yes they are still available, but have a lot more side effects. We have another one booked for next spring and just got back from one last month. We love cruising and will continue to do so. BTW, anyone who has ACTUALLY cruised know that the cruiselines are extremely environmentally friendly, not that I'm a tree hugger by any means, but it is stressed onboard and every ship has an environmental officer. There's always someone who has no clue, but thinks they do because they've read something negative.

Ships by law CANNOT dump garbage. They are however allowed to expel certain food products that are food to FISH. Everything else is held until they reach port. There are multiple cruise specials that address this. My husband is a US Naval Officer and he will tell you the truth, US ships do not dump garbage. Some foreign countries allow it and the med is one of the biggest dumping ground there are. For every article someone can find that says we're destroying the oceans, I can find just as many if not more showing how many laws are being followed to protect the oceans. For example, there is more oil being released naturally from the ocean floor than has ever been released by man.

By law? There are no international laws, only protocol, regulations and standards.

"Cruise" ships are governed by international protocol. The U.S. has some domestic regulations and laws enforceaable only in "U.S." navigable waters within states that have enacted laws pertaining to cruise ship pollution, but they are unenforceable in international waters and there is no single rule or law on the books. Oversight and enforcement are practically non-existant

And how many cruise ships are "US Ships", or are you referring to Naval vessels specifically? By the way, passenger ships are only a small % of the worlds shipping vessels but generate voluminous amounts of pollution.

The obvious increase in legislation and regulations is due to the increase of illegal discharge of pollutants in our oceans.

Cruises are wonderful vacations and you will have a great time. You will not get sick if you act ahead of time. Ginger, Bonine, etc will make your cruise experience more enjoyable. After I got sick on my first cruise I decided that wouldn't happen again if I could prevent it and I can. You will also meed some wonderful people. We've made several couples that we still keep in touch with and have cruised again with one of them.

There is nothing like being at sea.

I get extreme motion sickness. Sea bands didn't work for me on our cruise. The ginger actually made me feel worse. See if your doctor will write a script for the behind the ear motion sickness patch. If I remember correctly, each patch lasts 3 days, so you won't need many. I had horrible morning sickness (which feels just like motion sickness) and the patches were the only thing that helped. Good luck!

I still don't think you'll need one or will need it often. If you on one of those bigger ships, if won't be that bad. I have the worse sea sickness/motion sickness and I didn't need them on our last cruise. You'll be fine! Also, if you lounging by the pool, you'll be good, but then you might get sick from all the little drinks that you can order!

enjoy and let us know how it was!!!

crazy how all these different methods affect us all so differently, no?!

Also keep in mind that your motion sickness might not present itself as nausea. My sea sickness caused me to have a headache, feel edgy, and just "not right". I didn't even think it was related to the motion - I thought I just didn't like cruises! I took a Bonine to see if I would feel better and the difference was amazing.

Not that I'm advocating drugs as a first line of defense or anything...

Bonine, as far as "drugs" go has almost no side effects at all. Believe me, if you do get sick, you never want it to happen again. Most people who are sensitive to motion do get nausea from sea sickness. That is the number one symptom for most. Size of ship doesn't make a difference for most people. It's really specific motions. What affects some people doesn't affect others. Side to side doesn't bother me, but mixed seas do.

The patch has more side effects than any of the sea sick meds and that is precisely why it is by prescription only.

seas bands- CHECK. ginger- CHECK. Bonine- will check off this weekend after a trip to Walgreens... better safe than sorry- having these things on my person during the cruise won't break the bank and will only improve my cruise. no reason not to play it safe. :) thanks folks!

Not to reopen an ugly subject... but I thought this might be of interest to some of you who were wondering about the impact cruise ships have on the oceans. Interesting reading:
