Is anyone here aware of gyms in the area that do NOT require a contract? Or are there any gyms that you just absolutely love and want to recommend?

Lifetime Fitness does not require a contract. It's month to month.

Most gyms in the area have month to month terms. Most of which though require more money up front.

Also at Lifetime you can 'freeze' your membership if you wanted to stop it for a certain length of time.

but you're still required to fulfill the contract and most gyms require a good reason for freezing - medical (with a doctor's note) or moving or something. Not being able to afford it or deciding you don't want to work out isn't a reason to freeze.

It is, sorta. If you cancel, you must do so before the 5th of the month in order to avoid paying NEXT month's fees. We canceled our membership on August 10th, but still had to pay for all of September because we missed the deadline. So while it's month-to-month in theory, there are some gotchas there. Also, putting your membership "on hold" doesn't mean you don't have to pay something. I think they mentioned that when we were canceling. I think it was either $10 or $15 a month to keep your membership in an inactive state. And really what you're avoiding here is the initiation fee. If your membership is inactive for a year, you've just paid the initiation fee anyway.

To the OP, Lifetime Fitness is really nice... it's like a resort! On the flip side, you pay for it -- it was $130/month for my wife and I. We canceled for a few reasons (we're not gym people, everything there is an up-sell, broken equipment wasn't fixed for months, locker rooms ran out of towels more than once). It turned out not to be a good financial decision for us. We just work out at home now.

I LOVE Snap Fitness (over near Giant). No contract, low monthly fee. I can go whenever I feel like it (even when I don't feel like it!). Go check them out . . .
