I've been in NoVA since 2006 (moved from Massachusetts) and one thing is pretty evident: very few of us are actually from here. What are some of your favorite hometown foods that you'd like to see in the area?

For me, it's Chinese food. I'm not saying it doesn't exist here, but I'm unsuccessful in finding really good Chinese. I've been to Yen's, Cheng's and lots of other places in NoVA, but the food seems like it's all the same to me. Items I miss: chicken fingers, beef teriyaki (big hunks of flavor, not flat tastless meat on a stick), Peking ravioli (they're friend dumplings, but bigger), freshly-made crab rangoons (with lots of crab inside) and homemade duck sauce -- I never fail to be disappointed when I ask for duck sauce and I get a plastic packet of bland orange sauce.

Every time I see or hear of a new Chinese restaurant opening, I get a little excited... only to find that it's exactly like the last Chinese place I ate.

Another one for me: baked beans on a breakfast menu -- anywhere. I realize this is a northeast thing, but I sure do miss it.

Good fish and chips (I'm a Brit) - Bonefish does an ok job, but sometimes overly greasy. Clydes dived in for a month or so - I wish they'd added it as a menu staple.

I recall Red Robin does a good one, as does the Old Brogue in Great Falls, but not joints I frequent much!

I wish that they would have a good ole' fashion home cooking dinner with meat and three sides. The kind of food grandma used to make and no one seems to have the time for any more. Would be especially good with local crops and meats.

A good cheesesteak. I've yet to have a good one around here. I had a decent "chicken" cheesesteak from Jimmy G's in Sterling awhile back. However, they've been closed for quite some time.

A good hoagie would be nice as well (you really need to use the right kind of roll).

    I remember Jimmy G's - I loved Jimmy G's *sigh*.

I still keep wanting a place that will make a great quesadilla. Not that I consider that a "hometown food" since I'm sortof from all over the US, but every one I've had around here tastes like they stuck some Velveeta between two tortillas and nuked it.

Jimmy G's is now Santini's - is it just as good?

It would be nice to get an authentic Italian bakery here, just like northern NJ.

Also, Yen's cafe has told me that they offer lots of other Chinese dishes which are not on the menu, as they are not too sure how well the dishes will be received here in Nova. If you can think of something authentic, and request it, they will make it.

The one in Manassas is not too far away down 28 and has kids eat free on Sundays and other specials to choose from.

I am from here and well, there's nothing that I really miss because I grew up on everything here (including my mom's home cooking).

Well, I don't think it's gonna happen, but I would like some freshly caught fried Lake Erie perch.

I don't get it often enough to worry about the mercury and PCB levels!

well it's not exactly HOME, but i miss authentic Bavarian food from living there in my 20's: germknoedel, spaetzle, schweinhaxsen, mandeln, heisse himbeeren (we called it HOT LOVE!)... oh how i miss German food. :(

Doner in Leesburg doesn't serve THIS kind of German fare. Euro Bistro in Herndon does a good job, but nothing compares to Bavarian gasthaus cooking... nichts.
