Our old computer that we gave to the kids is not reading the D or F drive anymore. Can I use the reinstallation CD to just reinstall those two drives? Or, will it just wipe everything clean and reinstall Windows XP again? We have XP Home edition.

I am assuming that Windows is installed to hard drive C and that D and F are either additional hard drives and/or cd/dvd drives.

If that assumption is correct, then reinstalling windows probably won't help much. There are lots of moving parts in hard drives and cd/dvd drives and since you mention this is an old computer, I'd guess hardware failure is the most likely cause of the problem. Fortunately these things are not terribly expensive or complicated to replace. However, if either D or F is a hard drive that can no longer be read, you might not be able to rescue any data still on it.

Oh. Drive D is the CD/DVD drive and Drive F is the CDR drive. I thought reinstalling Windows would also reinstall all the stuff that goes along with the drives. Goes to show how much I know about computers...:(

Could be the cable, or motherboard connector. If you want, bring it by the tech meeting wed night at the nature center at 8. We'll take a look at it.

Umm.. ok? Don't see how that cracks you up. Wasn't meant to be funny.

Bring it by the meeting and we will seriously take a look at it.

I know. That's why it's funny. That the tech committee has members who are willing to look at another resident's computer for them at a meeting. It's a great thing but not all communities would have people kind enough to offer such a thing to their residents. It's a compliment. :)
