I agree...there's a difference between "rotten fish smell" and "fresh fish smell" and I didn't smell rotten fish in Global Foods.

Not to put down Wegmans because I buy fish from there often, but one time I brought home our usual 'Pecan Crusted Tilapia', opened up the package and was greeted with a very fishy odor ...cooked it anyway. When I took one bite, I almost lost it :sickhold:...took the fish (still warm) back to Wegmans and got my money back. I don't really have a point with this story, but goes to show even our beloved Wegmans is not perfect.

FYI- went to Global Foods for some last minute groceries before the snow-in. No lines, fully stocked, in and out in under 10 minutes. Just wanted to pass this along. I passed the FULL Wegmans parking lot on the way...

This place is unbelievably awesome. The produce prices are cheaper than anything I've ever seen around here and they tons of root vegetables if you're into Latin-style cooking.

I agree with the others; the fish smell is just like any another fish market I've been to. Plus, if you see the amount of fish they stock, you'll quickly understand why you can smell it.

Took the family and ate at the rest. in the food court (the Korean/Chinese one, not the sushi one) and it was good. Not great but good. I'd say it's as good as the food courts in Lotte/H Mart in Fairfax Co.

I went in, smelled the bad smell and left .... my uncle owned a crab house in Annapolis and we NEVER smelled things that bad in there. I wouldn't trust anything "fresh" in this store.

Its a nice store. The selection of fresh vegetables and fruits is awesome. They have the best prices too compared to any other store in Ashburn. I don't have any complaints regarding the fish smell as I don't buy fish. I will go back as long as their selection and price of produce is good. It's a nice addition to our area. I remember back in late 90's used to go to florida market in DC to get some traditional produce. Things started getting closer as new stores opened in fairfax, falls church area. The Grand mart in sterling was a great relief. Now this? I couldn't ask for anything more.

fish smell: yeah, it did smell (probably due to that tank with live fish, to many fish and not all that clean). But the other fish area was ok.

as an avid saltwater fisherman I know what old fish smells like and it wasn't that... regardless, everyhthing else was good :)

Just had an amazing experience in Global Foods this afternoon...so many nice people working there handing out incredible samples of food not often eaten by most Americans...loved it! I bought two beautiful steaks, well trimmed, some duck eggs (never tried that before), pickled garlic, shrimp dumplings (couldn't resist after trying a sample), unfiltered sake, and some good ole' white corn chips to go with the hummus we already had. I'm taking my wife over there tomorrow to get some of the vegetables that put Wegmans to shame!

By the way, no fish smell at all and that's with live tilapia and live blue crabs out in the open.

you are right about that- we bought some wasabi crusted tuna steaks a few months ago that were simply inedible. I took them back, cooked and all, and weggies accepted gave me a refund not quickly, but apologetically. they definitely aren't perfect but their customer servce is really great.

back to Global- I love their selection of products that you can't find anywhere else.

Are you sure these are not balut (fertilized duck eggs)? Make sure before you crack it open to find a little duckling in there.

We've been there about a half a dozen times, and we love it. Great price on produce, meats, etc. Great stock of asian foods. We love the food court - Always a big treat to to not have to pay restaurant prices for Bul-gogi, and the other dishes.

And the best part of all...it's only a short drive to buy kim-chi

Do they have the sliced ribeye for bul-gogi? I didn't see it the last time I stopped by. If you ever want a really easy recipe let me know.

Yum...you said kim chi. My (gringo);) hubby hates it when I buy it so I have a kim chi fridge and the little one and I eat it during the day when he is at work.

Yes, they do...and the last batch we bought was very high quality.

For those of you that need a little help making Korean BBq (Kalbi or Bulgogi) at home, They also carry a Korean Barbeque sauce, which is very good, but can be enhanced (for me, more garlic, but then I like more garlic on everything (most)) depending on taste. Used the sauce to make Kalbi for Christmas and it was excellent!

We too have a Kim-chi fridge - We just converted the mini-bar fridge to a kim-chi fridge.

also...Many of you probably have never tried a Korean Pear, please do. Picture a pear but with round shape, the size of small grapefruit and twice as sweet:mmm: .

I am just very excited to have a asian grocery store in our neighborhood. Grand Mart in Sterling maybe close but it is such a hastle to get there.

Mmm...Korean Pears are the best, they are crisp like an apple but sweet and tart at the same time.

I like to make a green papaya, korean pear and carrot salad with a garlic vinaigrette, its an easy way to sneak veggie and fruit into my little guys diet.

I use my grandma's bul-gogi recipe with a few tweeks:
    1-2lbs of sliced (thin) rib-eye
    1/2 cup light soy sauce
    1/2 cup dark brown sugar
    1/4 cup of mirin
    1 whole yellow sliced onion
4 cloves of fresh chopped garlic
    2 stalks of scallions
1-3 tsp of Korean Pepper paste (Sunchang Gochujang - I like the organic from O'food)
Marinate overnight in a zip lock bag
...but cooking the bulgogi over charcoal is the trick.

Try making a grilled cheese and korean pear sandwich. Thin slice of pear and some extra sharp cheddar. Outstanding!

I'll have to try that, I thought my triple creme bree was a great match but cheddar makes everything better. Thanks for the tip.

Smell has gone, yay. And the the "to go" Matsui Sushi is wonderful - freshly made to order at an amazing price (cheaper than Nagoya), great flavors, fresh ingredients, served with many smiles and thank you's. And, dare I say it, a step-up from the dry sushi that Wegmans offers.
