Went to Cafe Opera today for some carryout and noticed that there is a new Chinese restaurant opening THREE doors down on the corner. That is a complete an utter joke. Why a property owner would cut the throat of one of its long-standing tenants is beyond me. Totally classless act.

agreed it's a bad biz decision. Cafe Opera has spent years building their biz there, providing some of the best Asian cuisine in Ashburn. the landlord shoudl not allow the dry cleaners to sublet this place to a tenant that is a direct competitor of another tenant- ESPECIALLY if there is a non compete clause!!!

I'll never know if this other plac eis any good out of respect for Tin- owner of Cafe Opera. we've been loyal customers of hers since they opened and we have no interest in supporting this decision to let this happen.

I didn't see the earlier traffic about this in the Waxpool Restaurant Row thread, but I agree with you and others. As great as Johnny and his new restaurant may be, out of loyalty to Cafe Opera, I just can't and won't go there. As someone close to someone asked to be a part of the ill-fated Thai Basil experiment in Ashburn, I can't see a business plan having been formulated for this restaurant and can't see it lasting.

I don't see them lasting either - BAD BAD BAD biz decision on both parts. We try new places but always go back to Cafe Opera.

While I do like Cafe Opera, I am going to try the new place. I don't see why we can't support multiple restaurants of the same type? Yes the location of the two near each other seems strange, but I'll try the new place out.

That's true.. the last couple of times I order from there it was overly greasy and the meat was less than stellar. I'll be giving the new joint a test run also.

I'm not sure why ANY restaurant would open in Ashburn. :screwy:

In fact, opening ANY business here seems like a bad idea. Look at the miserable merchants and empty strip mall stores we already have.

I've eaten there dozens and dozens of times and have never once had greasy meat. And I get them all....beef, pork, chicken, seafood.
    Guess I'm just lucky.

It's not a matter of luck. It's a great place. We dine at Cafe Opera or grab take-out several times each month. The food has always been consistently quite good, and the service very attentive. We also appreciate that there's no MSG and chicken dishes are all white meat. We told the owner a few days ago that they'll continue to have our support, and the newbie will get none.

We might try the new place out. Whenever we've ordered Chinese we have used Cafe Opera, however Sunday night we placed an order and were told that it would arrive in 40 minutes. After waiting over an hour, we called them and was told "it'll be 30 more minutes". At this point it was 7:15pm and we have two young and hungry kids, so we told them to cancel the order. Ten minutes later our doorbell rang and there was the delivery guy. We simply turned him away telling him the order was cancelled. We were very, very frustrated and dissatisfied. If they couldn't make the delivery time, they should have called and let us know. I ended up with two overly hungry kids and scrambled eggs for Valentines.

given the road conditions and likely unforseen difficulties with delivery, i can see why it was late. our delivery experience is always the OPPOSITE- told 30 minutes- arrives in 15. hot, fresh, excellent.

We are very loyal to Cafe Opera. Definitely my fave and they always seem to get the food here within 15-20 minutes, I wouldn't expect food quick from anywhere on Valentines Day... Not only is it sad that the management company let this happen, I find it even more bizarre that the new restaurant owner is choosing to open his place three doors down from the same type of restaurant. With the amount of open spots in the area, why there? We're not talking about a Burger King and McDonalds type situation. Based on his decisions so far I think its a pretty good indicator of what will happen.

I learned my lesson last year - NEVER order takeout on Valentines Day.....ever, even on a weekday - you'll be waiting a long, long time, as you did!!!

As it happens, my family was dining in at Cafe Opera that night and I can tell you that the place, while not full, was busier than it usually is in terms of dine-in customers. There also were several people waiting for carryout when we left around 7:30pm. Cafe Opera probably just got slammed more than they expected.

Now that I think of it, I think I heard that that evening there was a traffic accident at Claiborne and Waxpool so maybe that had something to do with it. Between the road conditions and the idiots thinking they're invincible in their 4WD vehicles I'm not surprised it was late.

Hopefully it was just an off night for delivery.

Valentines Day had more to do with it I'm sure.......it's a very busy night for any restaurant.

It may have been an off-night, but we would have just preferred that they be honest about the delay. A phone call saying that it's taking longer than usual would have been totally fine too. We understood it was Valentines and that the roads weren't perfect, but as a business they should be honest on the wait times instead of leaving customer's hanging. That's all.

Our family loves Cafe Opera. We never do delivery from any of the local restaurants other than for pizza. We've never had good luck.

We will be boycotting the new restaurant near Cafe Opera. I'm not going to reward the owner's poor decision. They are going to hurt Cafe Opera and in the end, themselves.
It's our choice, we won't darken their door.
