I'm hoping someone with some tech knowledge can help me figure out what is wrong with my HP laptop, 1 year old. When I type it skips random letters. When I press the key it does not read what I am typing so I gt smthng tht loks lk ths. It will even skip the space bar, but it does not seem to be one particular letter. If I go back it will read it, but sometimes I have to press the key two or three times. Everything else seems to be working fine. Anyone think they may know what is wrong?

Remove the battery and see what happens.

HP has had problems in the past with the battery charges affecting keyboard operation.

Do you have a large mouse sensor /pad just below the keyboard?

Sometimes this sensor will interfere with typing and you will need to reset the 'sensitivity' of the mouse pad and/or reload the drivers.

Or there could be dust even small crumbs in the keyboard, get some pressurized air and blow it into your keyboard.

Dust a debris are always possibilities. You may even want to remove your keyboard (not too difficult in most laptops) for a real good cleaning.

If the laptop is still under warranty - wouldn't this void it?

I know my MACBook states something to this effect.

Yes! How do I reset the sensitivity thingy? I kind of thought it might have something to do with that.

Wouldn't plugging it into a wall without the battery install be able to determine if it was a battery issue?

Thanks to all who replied. As of now, it does seem to be the battery. I took it out and put it back in and now the keyboard seems to be fine. I will keep an eye on it and let you know.

OK, so keyboard started acting up again and this time I took it to The Geek Squad at Best Buy. The guy there said it was because I was running internet explorer. Which makes sense because I realized I did not have issues when working on a word document just when typing emails or using the forum boards. He had me download Firefox and all seems well, for now!

If using Firefox vs. IE fixes the problem, I would be very concerned about something running on the laptop that is not desired.

Usually when IE causes issues, there is something running in the background (spy / mal / ad ware) that is causing the problem. It might be worth the time to update the virus scanner and run a full system scan.
