Gross negligence on the part of the car's owner.

No no no... don't worry. I got passed in 35mph zone by a jeep with VA FIRE FIGHTER plates doing at least 50 in this downpour this afternoon. And just for good measure, he zipped in front of me with no signal requiring me to slam on my breaks.

All is indeed normal in the world, thanks to this asshat.

That's OK, the young lady passing two cars on Village Dr. yesterday, doing about 60mph more than made up for this. BTW, ma'am the black 4 door Benz you were driving was reported to the LOCO for wreck-less driving. However I doubt anything will come of it.

I see people run through the stop sign near mill run all the time on Claiborne. Do others see this happen a lot?

I don't think that even 2 feet deep potholes would stop some of the freaks who fail to stop at that intersection. I'm seriously amazed there aren't more accidents there...

My personal favorite are those drivers (and a certain BMW does this ALL the time) passing a line of cars that are lined up to turn into Mill Run. These drivers just gun it past all the lined up cars, driving down the wrong side of the road, all because they are too important to wait or go the other way down Stone Hollow. You dolt, do you think it's legal because you own an expensive car or are you just waiting to hit a kid or parent?

We nearly got creamed again (third time this week) by another mom-in-a-minivan-applying-makeup-or-talking-on-the-cellphone today speeding along Village Drive.

Minvans aside, why don't cyclists slow down when they approach pedestrians on sidewalks? My dog nearly got sliced in half by a cyclist going the wrong way on the sidewalk yesterday.

They are just as nuts on the W&OD, aren't we supposed to share nicely? F-wits.

Not trying to be smart or pick a fight, but is there a right and/or a wrong way when traveling on a sidewalk? Just curious since I've never heard this before.

Now, cyclists should NOT be riding on the sidewalks if you ask me, unless they're small children. Just my personal opinion...

    Good point!

Well I would consider it riding the wrong way when you are going against traffic and weaving between the sidewalk (and not warning or slowing down for pedestrians) and the road like this jerk.

Had that happen to me recently along the walking path. My dog and I walk a little slower now because she's getting older. We didn't hear the biker until he went flying past. My dog about jumped out of her skin, it scared her so much. Startled me, too. What if she had wandered in front of the bike at that second? Somebody would have been in for a world of hurt if they caused injury to my dog!

I agree. I ride on the road. That's why it's called a "road bike".

According to "Sharing the Road in Virginia" a safety guide put together by folks from the VDOT, DMV and others...

"Pedestrians have the right of way on sidewalks. Sidewalks are constructed to keep pedestrians safe. Bicyclists should avoid using sidewalks. If they do use one, they should yield the right of way to pedestrians. Bicyclists should ride more slowly and be more alert on sidewalks -- particularly when approaching a pedestrian. When passing a pedestrian when on a sidewalk, the bicyclist preferably should be traveling no faster than the pedestrian. The bicyclist should give an audible warning such as “bike on your left!,” and wait for the pedestrian to move over."

Hope this helps. I'm also still looking for a clear answer that addresses intersections like the W&OD Trail at Belmont Ridge and motorists stopping to allow stopped cyclists to cross (I'm not talking about slowing down or yielding to folks already in the crosswalk). I agree that we should all be courteous drivers but it appears to me that motorists have the right of way and stopping on that road can be dangerous. That as opposed to Ashburn Road where most folks are already going pretty slowly.

Perhaps "only slightly faster" or "with just a little more enthusiasm" would have been a more effective way to word that.
