Our family is looking for a young kitten as a pet for our daughter. Kitten should be socialized with dogs and other children. Must be litter trained, vaccinated and dewormed. Would prefer a female, any color is fine. Can accept into our home early July. Please contact me if you have kittens to place in a nice home.

Why don't you consider adopting? There are a lot of cats in need. You can go to the Loudoun Animal Shelter. Or there is Friends of Homeless Animals: www.foha.org or Lost Dog and Cat Rescue: www.lostdogrescue.org

With a lot of those places you have to adopt kittens on pairs which makes it harder for some of us to really consider.

I know that with HART and FOHA you don't have to adopt in pairs. I don't know about the others.

Not only that but, they make you jump through all sorts of hoops to adopt. The shelter is much better IMO.

I've heard some people say that about their experiences. I've adopted through FOHA and HART and both times went through an application and interview process. With FOHA I filled out the application, someone called to interview me, and someone came to my house to interview me. Sounds crazy, doesn't it? Still, the questions they asked made sense. They asked if I had owned cats before, what might cause me to return them, how I might "correct" them when they do something wrong, what the home environment was like, would they be left alone for long periods of time, would I be keeping them indoors, etc. Basically they wanted to be sure I knew what I was getting into and that I would treat them well. Gee, if only you had to be interviewed like that before having children... :rolleyes3:

But still, in my case it was easy since I've owned cats all my life and knew how they should be treated. However, even in such cases I'm guessing you could be denied based on the attitude/personality of the person interviewing you. If that person is kind of weird about stuff and would deny you simply because you had young children or children that she felt would be too rough on the cat, that could be a problem. But even so, they should just make sure you get a cat that is a good match for your family, i.e., one that likes kids and/or other animals. I don't think you should be denied entirely, just find a good match.

Anyway, yes, they ask all kinds of questions and you could be denied for some bizarre reason but that wasn't my experience. It's weird because when I lived in Texas all my cats were the "free kitten" variety found by an ad in the paper or a sign by the road. It's so complicated here!

Oh, and if you'd like a 3 year old cat that pees on the floor if the litter box is not immaculate you're welcome to one of mine. :angryfire:

I was denied by some rescue organization because I had a child under the age of 10 who might let the cat outside by accident. This was many years ago and I don't remember what organization.

From what I read yesterday, both places have tons of kittens right now, especially FOHA. I don't see where they have to go in pairs. Granted, it might be a little more time consuming to go through rescue, because of the questions and home check, but wouldn't it be worth it? But whatever is decided, I'm sure these kittens will be snatched up.

The volunteer who made that decision is stupid. There, I said it.

Another good thing about FOHA is they have lots of dogs and cats and can help you choose ones more likely to do well together, and will assist if you have problems post-adoption. These volunteers really care about the pets and work hard to make sure they get a chance at a great life after all they've been through. Each volunteer is different and each shelter is different, so one bad experience isn't necessarily going to happen the next time. I support the application process. When you are ready for a pet and want one yesterday, it's frustrating, but it doesn't take that long and it's for the good of the pet. I've got to say the volunteers have heard and seen it all and they put in countless hours of their personal time; their hearts are in the right place.

We have always selected our pets through the Fairfax Animal Shelter, so I have never been through the rescue application process..but I find it bizarre. Don't get me wrong, I support checking people out to weed out the wackos, but to refuse families because they have a child that "might" let the cat out (and this is not the first time I have heard similar stories) seems insane to me. Doesn't the cat have a better chance with a family that may not be "perfect", then living in a shelter or rescue with many multiple cats and no family to call their own? I think people that do rescue work are a special breed, and what a huge commitment, but once in awhile it seems as though the rest of us should be protecting the animals from them. Good luck finding the kitten for you..craigslist may be an option, there seem to be quite a lot of rescues posting on there.

Check out PAWS Rescue. They have adoption events at the Petsmart in Sterling every Saturday from 12-3. I believe you just have to fill out an application, pay the adoption fee, and you're set.
