LOL, you're not going to get much sympathy from a large amount of forum regulars, many of which have about the same amount of posts as T8erman or more, by calling them all 'obsessive'... ;)

My numerous posts are spread out over many topics and peak during political seasons. ;)

And as far as this topic is concerned, do I think Al-Atari is guilty? Probably, but let's let our legal system sort things before alleging his brothers, sisters, uncles, aunts, cousins, in-laws, friends and people who have eaten at his restaurant are involved in possible felonies.

BTW, is it true that Osama once owned the "murder house"? Think about it!

12 year sentence is a slap on this wrist, Osama will be out in 6yrs, if that - it will be interesting to see where he serves his time. Meanwhile, if/when they catch the cat that robbed the sandwich shop he'll get a stiffer sentence and serve more time. The American Justice system is whacked.

El-Atari Sentenced To 12 Years For Bank Fraud

Former Ashburn resident and Original Steakhouse owner Osama El-Atari will spend the next 12 years behind bars, after being sentenced for a fraud scheme in which he stole more than $53 million from banks in four different states.

Friday El-Atari, 31, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Gerald Bruce Lee to 144 months in prison, with five years of supervision after his release for three counts of bank fraud and one county of money laundering. He was also ordered by the court to pay $53 million in restitution.

"Osama El-Atari's greed has earned him 12 years behind bars," U.S. Attorney Neil H. MacBride said in announcing the sentence. "Especially in today's economy, we are committed to combating financial fraud and putting those who cheat the financial industry in prison."

MacBride, the U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia; Steven M. Dettelbach, the U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Ohio; Shawn Henry, Assistant Director in Charge of the FBI Washington field office; C. Frank Figliuzzi, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI's Cleveland field office; and Rebecca A. Sparkman, Special Agent in Charge of IRS Criminal Investigation's Washington, DC, field office, made the announcement of El-Atari's sentencing.

"Mr. El-Atari defrauded banks for tens of millions of dollars and used his ill-gotten gains to purchase expensive homes and exotic sports cars, but ultimately he could not outrun the law," Henry said in a statement. "As one of our priorities, the FBI is focused on uncovering financial fraud schemes such as the one perpetrated here and protecting the economy and the public from the financial damages that they cause."

El-Atari pleaded guilty to the charges, and acknowledged he defrauded banks in Virginia, Ohio, Tennessee and Maryland. In his scheme, El-Atari presented the banks with fraudulent life insurance policies-with supposed cash values of millions of dollars-as collateral to obtain fraudulent loans. El-Atari told the banks the loans were for various business ventures, according to the prosecution.

El-Atari set up fake domain names, used fake federal express mailings and fake e-mails in order to convince the banks that his collateral was authentic, but then used the money to buy exotic cars like Lamborghinis and Ferraris and to purchase a multimillion dollar home in Ashburn.

As investigations into his practices were ongoing, El-Atari fled the country is May 2009. He was apprehended in Texas in January.

The Washington and Cleveland field offices of the FBI along with the IRS investigated the case, and Assistant U.S. Attorneys Jonathan Fahey and Jack Hanly of the Eastern District of Virginia and Assistant U.S. Attorney John Sammon of the Northern District of Ohio prosecuted the case.

I had to smirk when he was quoted as saying, "I guess I should have been satisfied with the 500K I was making a year".
