We are planning a trip and I would love to hear your experiences. We want lots of toucans and monkeys, a little beach, but the boys will be 7 and 8 so we can't manage anything TOO strenuous in terms of all day hikes, etc.

    Must see?
    Must do?
    Must avoid?

    Thanks!

For part of our trip we stayed at Peace Lodge - it is FANTASTIC - truly the best part of our trip to CR.

Waterfalls, animals, volcanos, and a rainforest feeling!

Watch your consumption of fresh produce, just like in any other tropical paradise. Doing the zip lines through the rain forest was amazing (not sure if a 7 and 8 year old would be scared or not. A guide can go attached to them, though). Also, the canopy bridge tour through the rain forest canopy was amazing. We saw macaws (look like huge parrots) and toucans, leaf cutter ants marching for miles carrying large leaves...truly incredible.

Make sure you bring a small video camera and good camera to take pictures. We came home with some amazing footage and awesome closeups of poison dart frogs, etc.

Have a blast! We would love to take our kids someday.

Water Fall Gardens & Peace Lodge are part of the La Paz (I commented on your FB post about it yesterday, I just forgot to give you the link). We went in 2008 after I read a Frommer's review and we had an absolute blast, but I agree be careful with the tropical fruit you eat and be mindful of the water it is washed with.

Another tip: don't forget to brush your teeth with bottled water, unless your resort specifically states they have a water filtration system, otherwise you will have some dire consequences.

Sometimes you can get great deals to Costa Rica from Gate 1 travel (google them). I looked into it for Thanksgiving and it was just over $700 per person, including tax, for round trip air, 6 nights hotel in various places and a car rental. Went with a cruise instead but definitely considered Costa Rica.

Just make sure you have a bug repellant with DEET. We had it and did not get bitten, but another couple in our tour group used repellant without DEET and there had very skin left without bites....

I love it there. I wish to go back there again. I went to Rafting and hiking near the Volcano through the forest. many things to do there. Butterfly farm is great too .
