So how does one who doesn't have a clearance currently (but had a TS/SSBI in a previous life) find a job that will get them one? I find that most recruiters won't even talk to me unless I have the clearance. So, um, 20 years of IT experience doesn't mean anything. Gotcha.

No offense, but I really hate that the world is flooded with terrible IT recruiters, and it's a 99% chance that the person who calls you for a job a) doesn't have any sort of agreement with the company they're recruiting for and b) are merely looking to build their resume database.

Your best shot at getting your clearance back is going through the government. Contractors cannot get you cleared, they have to have a government sponsor to do so. Getting cleared can take 12-24 months...maybe even longer. That's why, even with 20+ years of experience, companies won't talk to you.

Recruiters see one word in a resume and they think you're the perfect fit for the job. I can't stand the recruiting field which is why my company utilizes word of mouth and referrals. I don't even bother (unless in dire straits) with Monster.com or ClearedJobs.com and the like.
