Please be advised that there will be no trash or recycling pickup services today, January 27th, due to inclement weather and hazardous road conditions. Trash pickup services will resume on Monday, January 31st, and recycling pickup will resume on Thursday, February 3rd. We apologize for the inconvenience. Thank you!

How are they lazy? I put mine out this am before I attempted to got to work. If I'd made it, it would stll be there. There are plenty of people who went to work this am with the thought that WE WOULD HAVE TRASH SERVICE.

This really stinks as they didn't pick up our recycling last week either. I think they thought it was the trash can and went right by it. All my neighbors had their recycling picked up.

Please report these errors to the HOA office or call Patriot directly. Patriot is very concerned with training their drivers and handlers and welcome comments on improving their service.

I did call Patriot directly and got nowhere. I got a message loop that sent me to who knows where and then finally asked me to leave a message. This has happened before and it's always the same thing. I can never get in touch with anyone.

I didn't call the HOA office as I've always seen the office direct people to call Patriot directly.

Let me know when that happens. They have asked us to have the residents get in touch with them directly with isuues and questions and if that isn't working, I'd like to know. Thanks Lori

Not pleased. Sorry, but the roads weren't bad today. I can understand being a late pick-up or, worst case, delayed a day, but "wait til next week" doesn't jibe with me.

Agree. The mailman got to my house today. Even got out of the truck b/c we didn't shovel the area, thinking there was no way he was coming (we're way up the top of Ridgeway and not sure what to think of the hill today). Kudos to the post office!

Why - because the bins and bags will sit on the curb until the next pickup. Did you put your's away when you learned there was no pickup scheduled?

Wow... aren't we pretty spoiled? Some people in other areas of the U.S. only get their trash picked up once a week and recycling once every other week (if at all!). Others in rural communities have to deliver their own trash to the dump. Perhaps we should be grateful that we have these services provided to us, and understand when inclement weather prevents these things once in a while.

I don't think it will kill us to wait until Monday for trash pick up and next Thursday for recycling.

Isn't that the truth? People are spoiled around here, they want everything.

Totally agree. My mail was here before 11am. Roads were fine. For the first time in years I had seen a plow here from VDOT, several times up the street. This doesn't seem to be any excuse for no garbage pickup and not even a makeup day today, wait till next week? Seems very strange.

Give the Patriot workers a break people. The roads were not THAT fine at 7:00 AM when they start their day. They have to heft heavy loads on, most likely, many slick roads. And FWIW, mail trucks are a heckofalot easier to navigate/control than trash trucks.

This is an excerpt from an email sent to me by the owner of Patriot Disposal:

Services were suspended yesterday due to the hazardous condition of the roads. Please keep in mind that our services not only require us to travel on major roads and highways, which for the most part were clear, but also on side roads and residential streets which for the most part were not clear. In addition to the travel, we have to consider that our employees are required to get in and out of the truck and run from curb to truck repeatedly throughout the day in the course of picking up trash and recyclables, which can also be an issue if the streets are unsafe for travel by foot in this manner. We also have to consider the fact that although many side streets can be safe for travel by car, they may not be so for collection vehicles. Many times, streets are clear enough for two cars to safely pass one another, but not for cars to safely pass with a large trash truck sitting there.

The decision as to whether or not to provide service when there is inclement weather is not taken lightly nor arrived at easily, but it is a decision that we are required to make at 5:00 a.m. or soon thereafter. Our employees meet at the yard each day at 5:00 a.m. to start their routes. If we are not going to run the trucks and the employees are not going to be needed for the day, they are sent home. It would be impractical and/or impossible to call everyone back in to work later in the day even if the roads have cleared significantly since the morning hours. Even if we were to do this, there is still no way to know at that time which roads have been cleared and which have not.

Our practices and policies regarding collection services when there is inclement weather are standard to the industry. Every trash company in Northern Virginia, at least, will postpone service to the next regularly-scheduled day, rather than to the next day, in the event of bad weather. The reasons for this are many, but the main reason is that the trucks that we use to provide service for the Broadlands on Thursday are the same trucks that are committed to providing service for other communities on Friday.

Please note, Patriot has arranged a special pickup of recycling on Monday, January 31st in addition to the regular Thursday, February 3rd pickup.

Thank you Patriot for arranging another pick-up of the recyclables! I will be very happy to get the mounds of recycling out of my garage.

It isn't just Patriot - the company that services Ashburn Village didn't come, either. You're getting a special pickup day, which is more than we're getting. I don't mind, though, since I figured the trucks weren't going to come yesterday anyway. C'est la vie.
